Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

Hi everybody, My name is Jack. I'm new to the forum and sprees, but not mechanics or even scooters. I have two Elite 150's, an 86 and an 87. I bought the Spree as a starter scooter for my wife to train on. It's an 86 with almost 5k on the odometer. It appears to be all stock and complete, pretty unadulterated overall. My question is this; I know not to expect lots of power, and I do weigh about 260, but........ This thing has really really bad low end power. Once it gets up to about 10-15 mph, it takes off halfway decent. Also, I noticed it smokes excessively at full throttle. It seems to be classic low compression/worn out piston and rings symptoms. Where is the best place to find quality big bore parts or kits? How far can the stock cylinder be bored safely? What is the biggest bore I can use without affecting reliability? I would like to keep it fairly stock, but if I have to replace those parts anyway I might as well add some displacement.

For the price of a new Honda oversizd piston, Tazland on this forum is the exclusive vendor of 44 and 48mm Big-bore kits for the Spree. Nobody but Honda-san makes cylinders otherwise. Scroll down WTB/FS and send him a PM.

Thanks for the info! So basically you have the stock cylinder bored to accomidate the larger piston? Also, does the Spree use a centrifugal clutch since there is no CVT? I am still doing tons of reading and research so sorry for the newb questions.

Yes it has a centrifugal clutch. Also the 44mm I know is bored out of a stock cylinder not sure about the 48mm though.

how do you know that?

It looks the exact same compared to my stock one, but bored 3mm bigger.

TZ if you look at them next to each other you will easily see that the 44mm was only bored from a stock cylinder. I had his 44mm bbk kit on my 87 Spree.

I think they are very close to the stock honda bore, but not the same.

It's only my opinion, I wish I could have measured it before I sold it. I some one want to donate a used stock Spree cylinder I will bore it for you for free to 44mm and see what happens.

Lets do that. I have a stock bore. do you want one to play with too?

Hey I'm all about it! I'll mail it back to you as soon as I can. I'll have to make sure we have a 44mm ball hone if not you could hone it yourself for about $22 from Fastenal. You or I will also have to chamfer the ports after the bore. I'll pm you my address.

Gingerbradman you bore? Can you do sleeves also? PM if this is true. And the 44mm is a stock cylinder bored to 44mm. Just to clarify. And if you are heavy get a 48mm with the gear ratio and you will be fine on power and top end.

TAZ I can bore and do sleeves as well. I have the resources of the machine shop at school however it's not for profit. I can't take advantage of the shop for personal use. Doing a bore and hone here and there is no big deal though.

My local guy said he maybe able to bore the stock one to 46mm
Any good 46mm pistons out there?
