1984 aero 50 help

Post by mdemuysere »

I think thats what its called..

http://www.motorscooterguide.net/page1/page5/page5.html its that type, From what i was told it sat outside at an airport for several months (was stolen) and than it wouldnt start. its my gf's brothers and she wants to use it for her last year of college. It looks like somethings missing, on the left side of it where the valve cover is, what is supposed to be above that? Theres a black pieces with nothing there, and there was a gasket in the crevice..

I know how to fix cars, but dont know anything about mopeds, and without somewhere to start, or a service manual i dont feel comfortable tearing into it and potentially making the problem worse.

thank you for any help - michael

p.s... the fenders were missing to.. so im thinking there is electrical damage, but all the wires look good, batteries dead. havnt charged it yet.

I did some searching, does http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-NB ... ccessories just pop into a box above the crankcase?

If so im assuming thats the airbox, and its missing the filter (part linked above) and it just snaps in lol.

Would make life much easier if i could just throw on a new filter, and charge the abttery and get this thing running.. its got like 4 k miles, and dosnt appear to have any major issues, well besides a majorly rusted exhaust system, and no rear body pieces lol.

yes, the air filter just goes into the black plastic airbox.

you dont need a battery though, you can just kickstart it, can't you?

Wont kick start.

I took a jump pack. Everything electrical works. Go to start it, it cranks but wont turn over. Unfortunately i have NO idea where to begin ... anyone have any ideas? I downloaded the service manual, ill go thru it and do the troubleshooting stuff, things on these bikes are a different looking from cars tho lol. So i dont know what all is what for some thing. As far as i can tell tho, the fuel pump looks pretty new, spark plug looks pretty new, wire looks a little old but its an ngk wire so it should be fine (usually quality stuff) all hoses (fuel and oil lines) look intact, and holding pressure (by a feel test, didnt actually check the pressure per line) so im sort of at a loss of what it could be at this point, im not willing to tear into the motor not knowing what to look for, as i have no idea where to get any gaskets for this thing lol.

Lastly, will it start without an air filter? I see no reason why not.. i know it would run a little rough.. but it should start still, The filters missing i found them on ebay and im going to order one if i can figure out how to get the dang thing running, but either way, im sure theres a filter cover to hold it in, and thats missing lol, unless its just held in by that metal piece and a screw goes in the middle to hold it all into the airbox?

Thanks for any help.. the service manual gave me some ideas, but the pictures are fuzzy so its hard to tell whats what in some areas. and ive never dealt w/ float valves and all that, but i get the feeling it might be something in the fuel system thats causing it to not turn over.

**edit** forgot to mention.. when i first got to this thing, and fiddled w/ it, the gas gauge read almost full, as soon as a charge hit the battery, it hit empty, i put a splash of gas (prolly 1/2 a gallon not sure what these tanks hold) and the gauge didnt move... not sure if that helps in any diagnosis.

a clean carb, fresh gas, and new spark plug are the first (and usually last) steps towards firing up.

look in the tech documents for a picture step-by-step on how to clean the carb, if you dont already know how

it should run without the air filter, as long as the airbox is in place, but it may run a tiny bit lean. just dont go near any sort of dirt.

Cranking and "turning over" are the same thing. Starting and running are different. If an engine will not turn over the piston does not move up and down and the crank does not rotate.

Is the "stop/run" switch in the run position?
Actually sometimes these engines will not start without an air filter. Is the top on the air box?

Do you have spark?

didnt check for spark, gunna do that tommorow night when im over there to look at it.

Guess i can pull the carb apart and clean it as well and order an air filter. Is there anywhere local (auto stores etc) that carry that or do i have to order it online?

And by top to the airbox, you mean the cover? if so, no.

Any Honda motorcycle or ATV dealer can get you one and sually cheaper than the online ones. Car part stores, not likely. Most motorcycle shops would be better than an auto parts place.

Yes the cover.
