Spree vs. Razz

Post by mopar4u »

Ok, I have a spree and a Razz. I just acquired the razz. The razz has 4,100 miles and has been beat to high heck. I think it is an 87 but that is if the plastic is original. The tranny is oil filled. From what i've gathered the Razz has the same slow single speed tranny as the spree with the exception that it is a wet chain driven style tranny. I got it running today and I would say that the razz I have accelerates about twice as fast as my spree and gets to 30mph roughly 35% faster than the spree. I can't find any engine identification on the razz, do you think the razz has a stock engine in it? I don't see any signs of welding or wires that have been spliced. I see a lot of goo and debris built up around the engine so a cylinder replacement doesn't look obvious. Only signs of being dumped several times :bowrofl:

My spree has the 44mm bbk and seems to run just fine, never had a reason to think otherwise.

Both with single speed tranny's and with the spree being lighter than the razz doesn't this seem odd?

i've got a razz too, and although i've never ridden a spree to compare, the razz does accelerate fairly well. nowhere near my aero, but still respectably fast. tops out at a little bit under 30.

Stock for stock, a razz will out accelerate a spree for sure. Just to be clear, you are saying that your 'thought to be stock' razz is beating out a 44mm spree by a good margin?

Did you get your razz from the same place as your spree? There is a BBK made for the razz too, so if they did one, they probably did the other.

Got the razz and spree from two totally different places. Actually the razz has been sitting abandoned for many years so I doubt it's been modified.

Yea I'm saying the razz all around seems faster than the 44 spree. It doesn't seem right to me.

Did any yamaha variated engines have an oil filled tranny? Anyone know where to locate the engine id on the razz?

I am very familiar with the razz. There is no variator in the razz and yes it has a chain. The razz was always faster that the spree. The razz engines in my opinion is one of the best scooter engines aroung for durability and longevity. The razz engine compared to the honda engine as far as durability and life is much better. The yamaha razz design had better accelerated and a little taller gear ratio than the spree. But to be honest I think the spree is the only scooter a razz can beat. hehe. thats if they are unrestricted anyways. There is a trick to make the razz go just a little faster. check the oil in the kick starter case. If the oil is full to the top drain 3/4ths of the oil out to create less drag on the gears and the razz will go about 10-15% faster.

Might want to be careful and leave at least half of it in there, that oil also lubricates the left side crank seal. If that seal blows all * will break loose. I had one give out and all the oil got sucked in the engine, I wondered why I was blowing smoke all the way home I looked like a fog machine lol

if your spree goes 30 or 35% slower than a 30mph razz, that right there is your problem. The spree should be able to do at least 25mph. Mine was doing 28mph stock. When I put oversized tires on it and cleaned the carb really well, it now does an honest 33mph on level roads. I think maybe your spree is not working/running properly and that is your issue. Maybe the spree isn't tuned for the BBK?
