how to avoid wrinkles

Post by fightingplankton »

so, i know there are several threads on here(i searched them) about people painting and running into wrinkles.
normally, this is due to cold weather and/or humidity...
well, its hot as * out there(100F) and i put on a thin layer of krylon fusion white(on my aero50) and got several spots of wrinkles all in different places.
i sanded it smooth, wiped it clean and dry, then painted as i always do...why am i getting wrinkles now?
too hot? paint drying too fast in certain areas?
i googled "what makes spray paint wrinkle" and found a bunch of stuff about using enamel paints over other paints and 2nd coats going on too soon...but nothing definitive.
a little help?

Wrinkles can also be caused by the surface not being clean. After pre-paint wipe down, touching anything with your hand or fingers will leave oil and the paint does not like that.

You don't even have to touch it. If any sweat drips onto the panel, the paint will not stick there.

Don't be afraid to wipe it down with a wax/grease remover over the whole thing, that is the only way to make sure you didn't accidentally touch it or sweat on it. Just a thought.

wont the degreaser leave a residue that would cause it to wrinkle as well?

Try Acetone.

no thank you...even a little bit of true acetone will eat right into the plastic. my gf works at a beauty supply store and brought some home...i figured i'd use it to clean up some over spray on my spree...now there is a q-tip tip sized gouge in my spree panel. actually, to the best of my knowledge, people use acetone to melt abs plastic to repair cracks...and it melts legos.

Greetings:

"Paint" advice from Wheelman:
The stuff from beauty supply stores is intended to remove nail polish, not prep for paint. There is oil in that Salon stuff that the hardware store Acetone does not contain. Very bad for paint prep.

A rag lightly sprinkled with Acetone will discolor to your paint color, but if wiped quickly and allowed to dry - it's almost instantaneous - won't mar the finish you're prepping for paint. De-greases very well. Paint thinner can work too, just be sure it's not the oily kind.

I agree with wheelboy. Also at the paint store are neat little products called "Tack Clothes" which do the same as acetone. Both dry fast and leave no residue. Also Brakleen does the same thing.

rubbing alcohol. idk how it will work on plastic, but my aluminum bike still has nice paint after 2.5 years.
