My latest problem

Sorry to be such a nuisance with a machine gun of questions lately here....

My latest problem is that my moped is not running strong at all. I first thought it was the belt slipping upon reading an earlier post. But now, I just started it again and listened to it more closely, it seems it is not running strong at all motor-wise. I've noticed a different smell in exhaust and it just seems to be sputtering compared to how it use to kick strongly. It use to reach 30-35 but now it can hardly pull 20 mph.

I've read a lot of solutions to problems being the air filter. I'm not sure how that works with mine as I have a plastic tube to a cone filter. Unfortunately, I do not have a compression tester. Also, I'm wondering...I recently used a gallon of gas my dad had got and it wasn't premium 91, it was 87. Could this be the issue here??

If someone could send me in the direction of what to test/check/do I'd appreciate it. I am starting to love not only riding this thing but learning how to fix it is also becoming a hobby..even if I suck at that part right now.

Thanks guys! :coolcruise:

Be sure everything is tight. no air leaks at all if you have to use the old carb cleaner trick to find it.

#1 problem here is that you are running a cone filter on the Spree. Did you happen to change the jets to compensate for the extra air flow? If you didn't then I guarantee that your piston will sieze due to running lean.

The issue is not the gas unless it was dirty. The 87 octane is what is recommended for these little Sprees.

Well I'm not very familiar with the mods done, I bought it off of mustangwagz on this forum. I came across a post of his though that said:

"i put the bbk on my spree. 44mm from taz. Like bear said, it came with the jet and instructions on how to modify my air box. I put an aftermarket apc filter on it instead, but could have very well used the stock box."

So hopefully I am in the clear on that problem. Still completely unsure and wanting to fix this though so I appreciate any and all help.

Wrap up the apc filter with electrical tape. Leave just a tiny bit untaped (1/8th inch or so). see if that makes it run better.

If it does, you should get a UNI filter, they work better with the bbk's :imo:

Find out what jet is in the carb too

I would start by contacting mustangwagz and finding out exactly what size jet he put in there? I personally wouldn't trust anyone elses build unless it was someone like Baka, Wheeldude, or Z50r_b.

Pull the plug and take a picture. Post it up.

If that is true, it should run on an open carb.

try to remove the tube and apc filter, and see if it runs that way.

Just tried taping the filter and also removing the filter and tube completely, still spuddered both times. :(

It will idle but it's just spuddering and has very little power at all. It's running a lot louder and the exhaust seems to be clouds of white smoke compared to use to be nonvisible. Is this starting to lean toward piston?

Here's the spark plug:

Really appreciate all the help guys. I'd probably of gave up on this thing if it wasnt for this board.

Its kinda hard to tell from the pic but it looks to be really wet. Maybe too much fuel getting into the cylinder?

What oil/gas ratio are you using?

Too much oil will cause a lean condition.

I'm with Brad3, looks way rich to me and not from to much oil either, it does not look lean at the plug tip, looks washed off rather than cooked. Needle hung up maybe.

90 main jet.

if i recall correctly, thats a newer plug also..(which crime_spree put in the day he flooded it?) i agree with bear also..does look rather washed down!!

i'd start with tearing the carb apart to check for any shmeg that got in thurr..

also, check the fuel filter..

ok..one last thing...guys...ya think oil pump is leakin into block??...he said its cloudy as *..(although plug doesn't show signs off excessive oil?)

Well I noticed the other night when I took off the fuel line (the one with the filter attached) that no fuel was pouring out so I thought maybe it was something caught up between the petcock or tank. I siphoned the fuel out of the tank..took off all the lines and petcock, cleaned them all was able to blow air threw everything. I took apart the lower part of the carb and it looked fresh as well. Changed the fuel and put 91 back in...Crank her up and clunk clunk clunk still spuddering and running weak.

I am running out of ideas of whats wrong here. I think the problem came about while I was running WOT down a hill. It's weird because it was running fine until that last time I rode it, it seemed to be weakening as I got it home. Then the following day I go to start it and it's running weak again.

That's all I got for updates for now. If anyone has any thoughts on more things to check please chime in. Thanks.

A spree is not a moped it is a scooter.
