Starter pinion isnt engaging!

after my string of problem with the scoot, heres the next one!
after putting my rings on and everything... i attempted to start it, the starter pinion now doesnt engage with the crankshaft gear, if you grab the tip of the starter pinion and twist right, it expands upwards as if it would engage, my starter pinion isnt doing this!
how do i fix this, do i just put something in the starter pinion so it is always in the upmost postion and always engaging with that crankshaft gear?
hopefully this is the last issue before the beast runs!
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could be a weak return spring. They get stressed and weak with age and miles.
Make sure you use a 10mm. washer between the outer housing and shaft of the Bendix. Good luck, greg.

maybe your battery is weak. if its not strong enough it will cause it to now come out when you hit the starter button....

i dont think its the battery, i am jump starting it, and it spins real real fast. as soon as i stop pressing the start button, the spin slows down and it engages for half a second, then stops.
i'm going to try the grease idea and ill let you know

i tried the grease thing. i put lots of grease on the sliding portions and tried starting, it spun real well but it still wouldnt engage, it was as if the top half was stuck to the bottom half with grease, so i used some grease remover/lubricant, and then it did what it used to: it would spin real fast, then when i stoped pressing the start button it would slow down and engage for half a second.
now i am thinking it mite be the start motor, i replaced it with a slightly different model mitsuba sm-10 starter motor, it is identical to the old one, just different mounting points. now i am questioning this mite be a slightly faster spinner, and it spins too fast for the starter pinion to engage!
is this possible?? am i making reasons up? help! this is the simplest thing but giving me another huge problem

Now it sounds like it's going past the ring gear, with it engaging on the way off.
Send a pic. if you can of the bendix in a couple different angles.

here are those images!
if you could please take the time to look at them, i am really stuck in a hard place here. in my amatuer opinion the starter pinion appears to be in working condition, thats why i cant under stand how it isnt working properly
your help would be greatly appreciated

I'd tell you to write upsmale about buying a used one, but I'm betting you're from the UK. Used is the way to go on these scoots, unless you know it's the only problem.

does anyone know how i can get the starter pinion, to stay in the engaged postion without it compressing back into the unengaged position. i tried putting a paper clip down between the inside edge, but the top gear keeps engaged with the crankhouse gear, but the starter pinion sort of spins on itself and won't spin the gear
