So I bought a Spree IOWA......

So I went and looked at a Spree yesterday.....the CL ad said it ran but needed a battery. So, I threw my booster pack in the truck and went to look at it. Got there, hooked up the booster and the scooter was dead...no lights, starter, nothing...dead... We messed with it a bit, pulled the plastic, wiggled wires, and still nothing. He said..."well, just shoot me an offer...I won't be insulted"... I pulled out a $100 bill and said "will this do it?".... He thought about it for a few seconds and said "sure...what the heck"..

I got it home, went and got a battery and started checking the electrical system. Right away, I found a fuse that actually looked good, but tested bad....I replaced it and the little guy started right up!

Anyway, it says "IOWA" on it and from what I have read it has a restrictor somewhere? Is it in the muffler? Can I just put a "Non-IOWA" muffler on it and call it good?

I'm guessing $100 was a pretty good deal? It has 2400 miles on it and only a few minor scratches and a tear in the seat...

Thanks,

LM :peace:

All you have to do is remove the exhaust. Look in the head pipe (the part that bolts to the exhaust flange on the engine) and there will be a washer welded in there. Either dremel it out or use a stepped drill bit to ream it out. Bye-bye restricted exhaust.

Thanks Bear, I'll take a look. I have the scoot on the bench right now and I have a step drill and a dremel...if it's there, it'll be gone soon.

It runs good down low but stumbles at full throttle....I cleaned the carb this morning and it didn't seem to help. I just went and got a new plug for it so I'll try that. If that doesn't help, maybe I;ll look at the fuel strainer but of course it has a full tank of gas in it to deal with in doing that... Maybe I'll have another look at the carb as well, as there may have been mre debris in the line that went in the carb..I will check the compression as well, that spec should be in the manual??

When you have the carb apart, check the main jet. If it is a 65, you need to install a 68 jet for unrestricted use.

Compression minimum is 114 PSI and is in section 3 of the manual.

Main jet is indeed a 65, where do I get a 68? Just go to the Honda dealer and ask for a Keihn (spelling?) 68 main jet or is it something special???

Thanks,

LM

The 68 jet is the standard jet in the non-IOWA Spree.

Honda sells them. JET, MAIN (#68) Part number 99112-GHB-0680. A number of members sell them, Tazland001 also sells them.

Well, Set me up Taz... I just took it out again this time with the new plug and it still noses over (actually cuts out) at anything over 3/4 throttle. Right now all I can get is 20mph out of it...

Is it worth taking a look at the fuel strainer in the tank? If I hold the rear wheel off and hold it wide open it will wind up momentarily and then nose over....I know this time that the carb is absolutely clean...

I am also going to go take a look to see if someone may have already "converted" the exhaust and this thing is needing the 68 main jet already.....

What the heck is with the Iowa edition anyway??? As if the standard Spree was too fast??? Strict state law on MPH, or what???

IOWA has a totally different definition than the rest of the country.

Most states say less than 50 cc and less than 30 mph, while Iowa does is what is mentioned here.

your "cutting out" issue could be related to too much air getting in. check that your airbox lid has the screw in the center, the 2 orings on the intake side of the carb are good, and your hose clamp is tight. the sprees are very tempermental with the airbox I've had to duct tape the lid on with some, silicone where the tube meets the airbox on others, and others will run great with the lid just clicked on.

Here is a picture of my exhaust...doesn't appear to be a restriction device in there....

The air box is all there and intact along with the center screw. Hose and clamp from the box is all good..

Hoping the larger jet will make the difference being that the restriction device is gone and the 65 jet is still in the carb...

I did notice that the little outlet pipe is broken off of the muffler though....what do you think/? Could that do it...I'm thinking not..but I've been wrong before a time or two...
