se50 malossi head

Post by turtle13 »

has anyone used the malossi head for the SE50/NB50 big bore kit?
it has diagonal cooling fins like the dio heads. if nothing else this could help cool the hot running SE50, right?

Not by itself, it will run hotter do to the raised compression.

well it would run hotter with my stock o-ringed head i was going to run anyways...
so i guess i should say, "it will run cooler than my modified stock head".

Greetings:

May I suggest you measure your current compression ratio? You can measure the head's combustion chamber volume with a piece of flat glass, some oil, and a syringe graduated to the cc. Compare the volume to the Malossi, should you decide to get it, and you'll have some idea of whether or not you'll need an extra head gasket or 2. It's not clear that the diagonal fins will provide any additional cooling compared with your bored-out and o-ringed stocker.

being that the malossi is designed for the bbk i can imagine that it is less compression than my stock head that was designed for the stock bore with a relatively unmodified chamber. looking through malossi's online bank of goodies i saw that there was an o-ring listed in the replacement parts, so i believe this will be yet another gasket free affair.
I went ahead an pulled the trigger on ittonight. i would rather slowly amass parts and build this engine right, however slow the build process may be. once i get back from my honeymoon in mexico on nov 3rd and get xmas inline this build should finally start to come together, as i wont have quite a watch full eye over my spending... until then the slow hoarding of parts shall continue.
oh and there is 1 more head avail, now that i got mine ordered, i will share the wealth and let someone in on the deal.

about the same with shipping as it is from malossi WITH OUT shipping, so a decent deal, but not amazing.

That is a good seller, I've bought from them before. I have had that exact head on my watch list for the last 6 months waiting for them to drop the price again (was at $42). Let us know how it compares to your modified stock head. did you deck your head at all?

I did not deck it, being that I had it o-ringed it effectively decked it the thickness of a head gasket once installed.

That last one was a myth, I bought it right after you bought yours. They said they only had yours left and refunded my paypal. I too was watching it for a price drop, good luck with it tell me the results please I found another!

it will be a while before i can post any results, as this motor probably wont be fully built till probably mid winter. received the head today though, it is indeed am o-ringed head, and the combustion chamber does look far more efficient than stock design (flared around the plug to spread the flame). however it does seem to have taller diagonal cooling fins, whether or not this will fit under the stock cooling shrouds has yet to be seen.
at this rate i almost feel like buying a malossi intake and carb just to make the set up fully malossi... however their carb is just a tad to expensive for my taste. probably will end up with an arreche 19, but debating a ct intake...
