1988 Elite LX SA50...plugged muffler

Recently aquired a 1988 Elite LX SA50. Looking forward to some "tinkering fun" this fall & winter. It's in good condition and is complete. Speed tops out at 30mph at about 3/4 throttle...but at full throttle, the same 30mph! Engine feels and sounds good at 3/4 throttle but flat and "sour" at full throttle. I've installed a new air filter element (it had none in the air cleaner when I got it and it would barely reach 20 mph that way and felt like it was running "rich"). Spark plug looks good. I tend to think the problem might be a dirty carb or plugged exhaust
I posted the above note back in early October. After cleaning the carb, fuel filter & tank and trying a #90 main jet (stock is #88), I still had the same poor running scoot. Finally I decided the problem most likely was a plugged, or plugging, muffler. So I was told to drill a 1/2" diameter hole at the rear of the muffler (on the wheel side of the muffler's seam) and ...yeeha!...what a difference! It now easily reaches the 60kph mark on the speedometer (38mph) and, with a bit of a tail wind, will reach the "F" mark of the fuel gauge! The incresed noise may not be socially acceptable, however!
