HELP! Piston circlip stuck to magneto behind flywheel.

Post by bjih_86 »

I am installing the new piston set. I managed to get the first circlip in and then whilst trying to pry the second one in, it slipped and fell behind the flywheel and was eaten up by the magnets. is there anyway to get the little guy out with having to pull the flywheel?

When I turn the flywheel over, it sometimes catches and prevents the crank from turning over.

I put rags in the crankcase to stop it falling down there and then I get caught out by something else. Murphy's Law i suppose.

Pull the flywheel, the magnets will prevent you from getting it out otherwise. FYI, STOP turning the crank with it in there, you will end up ripping a wire out or shorting out one of the coils, then it gets expensive.

I was hoping i didnt have to pull the flywheel as I dont have the tools to do it.

Hypothetically, if you drop a circlip in the crankcase, can you flush it out or do you have to split the case?

Greetings:

In the Hypothetical circlip-in-crankcase situation, sometimes you get lucky and you can sort of see where it is. Getting it out is another matter. You can try inverting the whole thing and shaking or maybe with a mechanic's magnetic retriever.

The tool to remove the flywheel isn't expensive or hard to get or hard to use. Someone here will remind me if it's the 24 or the 27mm we need.

I've dropped a circlip in the crank case twice and it was a fawking pain in the butt to get out. You need precision like a heart surgeon.

I dropped one yesterday, and still haven't found it! Next time I try to install these monsters, I'm going to find a dowel rod slightly smaller than the circlip, slip the clip over it, hold dowel rod against the piston and hopefully, get the clip on without it flying away!

Jeez, don't you guys stuff a rag into the crankcase before you start the removal attempt? :)
