I've got a cylinder that has some melted piston in it.

Am I correct in assuming that the "smear" is aluminium from the piston, and that the wall of the cylinder is something significantly less soft?

This being the case, am I better off trying to eat the aluminium smear away with carefully applied muriatic acid? Or should I be phoning up a machine shop to have them polish it out?

If it's a stock Honda bore it's cast iron. Just use the acid to clean it.

You can always check for iron/steel with a magnet.
