Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

i just bought an 86 spree and got it goin and when i start it it will rev up quite abit to were the rear wheel is spinning pretty fast .. with the throttle ajustment screw all the way out it doesnt even make a diference.. will some one please give me some advice

First this I would check would be:

A) Is the throttle cable jammed?

B) Is the throttle slide inserted correctly?

Both can be done quickly by taking off the panels and unscrewing the throttle from the top of the carb and remove.

If the cable isn't seized then just make sure you have the slide oriented correctly when you put it back in. (One side of the carb has a nub part way down that can be tricky to line up with the corresponding notch in the slide).

i will try that and get back to you guys .. and if that is not the case what else can i do

Next thing to do would be to check the filter, which is unlikely to be the problem from your description, but is a quick check.

Then you'd need to look for air leaks in the intake.

Probably a problem with the slide being inserted wrong or the throttle cable being frozen though. Especially likely to be the cable if it was sitting for a long time.

I vote for the slide being installed incorrectly.

yeah when i first got it there was a bolt missing on the intake and the other one was snugged up to were it was pullind it apart and leting in alot of air .. i repaced that and it didnt solve the problem

you still have an air leak.

the throtle cable isnt the problem i tried it earlyer today still is doing the same thing

You installed the slide backwards. Slanty-side needs to face inlet flow.

They are not talking about the throttle cable. They are talking about the throttle slide, inside the carburetor that the cable attaches to. Unscrew the top of the carb, pull the slide out with the cable and rotate it 180┬║, reinsert, then screw top back down. See Noiseguys post above.

I don't believe it. The slide is either in wrong or you have a giant (read easy to find) vacuum leak. I still say the slide is not in right. Especially if the idle speed screw has no effect.

I vote the petcock is bad. Mine did the same thing. Might be nasty, but pull your vacuum line off and suck on it, if you get a mouth full of gas, your petcock is bad.
