Spree - back from the dead.

Post by wtdash »

Hi,
Step-son looking for a scooter for the last year. He found and bought a Spree for $50 (yes, I warned him of buying a 'project').

I'm not a mechanic (uh oh - here it comes), but do my own wrenching on my cars/bikes. When it comes to electrical, I'm in trouble, and diagnosing issues isn't a virtue of mine. :-(

Patient:
'84 NQ50

Status when purchased:
Non-functional and in need of much TLC. Wiring was hacked, tires flat and missing misc. plastic pieces.

Current status:

Ebay comes thru again - bought most of what we needed.

- Installed used harness using the wiring diargram provided on here (Thanks!) - 95% complete.
-NOT connected: front/rear turn signals, rear brake light, horn (MIA)
- newer gas tank
- Carb kit from Honda (if you'd call it that- really just 3-4 orings and a gasket)
- New Battery
- New spark plug
Issues:
- Key ON, kill switch @ RUN, Oil light illuminates - but when pushing the starter button we get nothing @ all - no crank, no noise.

- Checked: On centerstand and left (rear) brake lever in locked position.
- Battery - 12.5V
- Getting 12.5 V to the Starter Relay but it goes to 0v when we push the starter button>>is this correct??
- Haven't tried wiring the starter directly to the battery
- No clue on condition of coil/reg-rectifier/stator/alternator/etc.

If there's a 'troubleshooting' guide on here, please direct me to it....working my way thru the Factory Service Manual's TS section, too.

Thanks,
Td

fill the oil tank with fesh honda gn-2 2 stroke oil, then pull the transmission cover and see if you can turn the motor over by hand. Also, grab the right brake lever (front) and try to start. that's how my 86 spree is, (but it's also pretty hacked) and when you have the transmission/belt cover off, check to see if there is anything actully pinning the startor motor so it cant turn over. IE check to see if the motor can actully spin freely.

^Thanks.

Made some progress - we tried a direct wire to the starter and it turned over!

The starter switch wire was loose so we fixed that and can now get it crank......

But no gas getting to the carb. I sprayed in some starter fluid and it ran for a few seconds, but still no gas in the carb (tried the drain screw on the float bowl), and the 2-stroke oil was just starting to climb the tube.

We changed the petcock under the tank - no difference.

How do we get the carb to pull fuel from the tank? It's not just gravity-feed is it?

Thanks

LOok at the two hoses coming out of your petcock, follow the lower hose unill it hooks up at the intake, then disconect it from the intake side not the petcock side, then unplug the upper hose from the carb and stick that one in a bottle, now suck on the lower line and you should see fuel coming out of the upper hose. The petcock uses a rubber diaphram.

IF you do not get fuel by doing that then your petcock is bad, if you do get gas, stick the upper hose back onto the carb, suck a couple times then put the lower hose back onto the intake, then crank in 10 sec. Intervoels until she pops.

YOur fuel screen inside the tank above the petcock might be clogged.

I have one petcock that flows fuel out of the lower when I suck on the lower and it comes out of the upper also. If a guy wants to get rid of the "automated" petcock and put in a good old ball valve on a spree, what is the best way to go about it? Is it a standard size fitting on the bottom of the tank?

I presume you would then block off the vaccum on the intake also.

Either brake lever will allow the starter motor to crank the engine (all you need to do is get the brake light to be on). The front one does however have a lock on it so you do not need to hold the lever.

Then your bike is screwed up. The two brake switches are in parallel with each other and use the same wires from the handle bars back to the light. It is either a bad switch or the switch pigtail is not plugged into the right place.

Then why are you giving instructions to others that actually only applies to your "hacked up" scooter?
