86 Spree or 88 Elite?

Hello there. I am looking for some opinions.

I was snooping around and found an '88 elite es close by. Looks ugly because its covered with stickers and it doesn't run. (Waiting for a full side pic).

Asking $300 obo. What do you think? (According to a text he said it was in his "friends garbage". So I'm guessing I can low ball him....)

On other hand I'm getting close to getting 86 Spree to run (I hope.) It was $200

Elite es has the variator right?

How does the '88 Elite ES (5k miles) compare with the '86 Spree (800 miles)?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I would be all over that Spree. The Elite could be a shot in the dark, but so could the Spree. If you've got the cash, get both. Thats my way of doing things when i can afford it.

So sorry, J, but no. Some non-US-market Pal models may have been variated, but the not the Elite ES. However the ES is the Acme, verily the Epitomy of Spreevolution. With the rare and coveted coveted SB reeds and (methinks) slightly taller gearing a-lurking in its un-variated AF05E crankcase, (A.K.A. NQ/05 or SB/05), it should handily walk away from the mundane stock Spree on its way to an invigorating 35-MPH top speed.

All of the sb50s had a 13-83 gear set. Some of the '86 sprees had 12-83 and some had 13-83 according to the dealer parts book. In proper running form, the spree is good for about 28mph and the elite ES is good for 35mph.

I have the spree working now.

However, the Elite50 has been lowered from $300 obo to $200 obo.

I offered $75 last night and he said it was too low. (I heard too many awesome grabs from this board to not give it a try myself...)

So, knowing this scooter "doesn't run" and that I have only seen pics of it, I have a few questions.

1)I paid $200 for the spree and dumped another $75 for cleaners, spark plug and a new battery (and some misc tools). Do you think I could sell it for $350?

2) I was going to offer $100 for the Elite. I really didn't want to go more than $150 not knowing if the engine or something else was toast. What would you feel is a good offer?

3)Related to question #2, being new to scooters, what should I be looking for upon inspection of the Elite?

Thanks

I found out yesterday he doesn't have the keys either. Im not sure of that's why 'it doesn't run.'

Im guessing it didnt run before AND he lost the keys.

Either way, may still be worth it for $100. I figured I'll wait him out this weekend and if it's still there, then maybe he'll figure its better than nothing.

Thanks for your input...

Greetings:

The rare and unique plastics, decent-looking saddle, and the coveted SB reeds alone are worth more than $100. Don't get too picky, lest someone else realize the same.

Go with the elite. I love my spree and its going to be the fastest one around but if your running stock elite is faster top end and off of the line. :thumbwink:
