Actually that oversimplified explanation is correct...at least for one type of Elite engine I know...

I have installed a '89 Elite E engine into a spree - using a spree carb too! I can't speak for other engines though

I used the existing Spree engine mount and had to cut at the frame like 1/4" to make room for the engine in the starter motor area. You can size it up and see. Also it is true you will have to move the shock mount on either the frame or the engine. I haven't yet, and as a result, the rear wheel touches the ground when on its centerstand - this can be solved by putting a piece of plywood under the centerstand...

if you are going to do the motor swap. Use the 87 motor mount for it.You have to cut both sides of the mount to fit in the spree. but it will fit with the rubber of the tongue just being able to go into the tube of the frame. You need to move the shock mount to below the battery box at least. you have to use an 89 brake cable for the rear brake to reach the 87 motor with the 87 motor mount. Also you will have to change the throttle cable. The spree throttle cable might be too short for the se50 motor with the 87 motor mount. Your back tire will hit the mud flap. But cut it off about half way and it should be good to go.

We're not exactly tripping over Dio plants on the mainland; they're like hen's teeth here. The SE50 swap in is a heck of a lot better than the alternative (49cc pushing a fixed pulley,) and you can actually find them.
