87 Elite se50P derestrict bang for the buck?

Good Day y'all!

So I finished fixing the need to fix in order to ride my Elite 50 on the street legally (blinkers, licensing, speedo / mileage) and now I am on to bigger and better things :coolcruise:

Wondering what would net me the most additional top end speed:

1. adding non-restricted exhaust from and se50 or sa50

2. adding non-restricted ramp plate

3. adding non-restricted ramp plate AND keli variator

Thoughts?

Im hoping its non-restricted ramp plate and variator as of right now I cannot locate any exhaust options other than new performance and at this point, that much $$ is not in the works.

Thanks for the opinions and thoughts, helps one make a better choice!

You can also use the exhaust from a 85-87 aero 50, 88-93 elite lx/sr. Get any of the aftermarket variators.any of them is better than the stock one. Also check to see if your se50p came with the 10to1 gears. Some of them came with it. Easy way to check is take the trans cover off and count how many times the clutch bell spins to 1 rear wheel revolution. You will either have the 11to1 or 10to1. You want the 10to1 gears. That will push your unrestricted setup to at least 50to55mph

Those are both spree exhausts.

No they will not fit.

Greetings:

You should avoid these de-restricting measures until you verify the Main jet in the carb. De-restricted Aero models with essentially the same block used a #82, which you'll also need if the ramp plate, airbox intake and especially the exhaust is opened up. Not sure what the SE50P stock jet was, but I'll bet it was smaller than 82.

Verification of the jet is basically checking it's not the "Iowa" model, right?

To make sure you don't burn up your engine from lean conditions.

Help me understand: How does a non-restricted exhaust and non-restricted plate make the engine run " lean"?

Elementary, my dear RIOT-Son:
The stock jet is adequate to supply the RPM and heat loads that the engine will develop with the restricted pipe and variator limiters. Maybe it gins up 6500RPM, tops so restrained. Maybe even less.

Once uncorked with Pipe, your S engine's RPM and BMEP both go up, a LOT. Spinning up to 8500 or more, the engine will demand more fuel in the mixture than the stock jet can provide. Insufficient evaporative cooling from the drier fuel charge cause combustion chamber temperatures to rise into Dangerous range.

Fortunately, Honda-san has determined the optimal jet size for us; It's in the unrestricted version. Honda-san tended to jet a bit lean thanks to EPA Emissions rules, though. A size bigger than stock usually won't hurt anything.

Alright, so I found the jet a bikebandit. That's good, but how hard is it to do? I am mechanically inclined BUT I have never worked on a carb...

Thanks!

Greetings:

If you've attended the Screwdriver Safe Operator's Class, not very hard.
You need to drain and dismount the carb. Two tight Phillips screws drop the bowl. Use a new bit, not your Granny's kitchen-drawer item.
A narrow slotted driver untwists the Main. Check the size engraved on it in case someone already swapped it.

Call your Honda dealer and read the Partsdude this nunber: 99101-187-0**0. Insert 78, 82, 85 and 88 in place of the stars for the size you want. Get all 4 for around $16.

Righty-tighty the selected size, reassemble the carb and reinstall. Go easy on the 2 8mm hex bolts at the carb flange. Al-you-minnie-yum is easy to strip if you eat too much Wheaties.

The FSM has step-by-step instructions you can follow, or search Wiki-Spreedia.

Ok, jetting aside, what accomplishes more: nonrestricted pipe OR variator and nonrestricted ramp plate?

Additionally, can I put in larger jet with the rest of it stock or do I need to do it coordinated?
