starter motor won't turn over

-just got it from a guy on ebay (said it worked properly)
-battery charged fully i think -brake light and turn signals work, but do dim when i try to turn the starter motor
-starter motor made a sound but didn't turn, pulled it out and checked and re-checked ground and it eventually stopped making any noise when i pushed the button
-stater relay is clicking when i push start

any ideas?

I would BRIEFLY (<1 sec) hook up a 12V battery directly to the starter and see if it turns over. If not, you have a motor problem.

My starter motor wasnt working so I took it apart and it turns out the previous owners took it offroad and messed everything up so I had to get some toothbrush type things and "clean" it by lightly rubing the inside of the starter motor with the brush. Then it worked fine :) (it's beter than going out to buy a new one when you dont have much extra money)
