86 Spree starts good, runs, then dies

My daughter reports that the 86 Spree I gave her, starts up good, will run to corner, then dies and very difficult to start. I suspect the fuel strainer may be clogged or there may be an issue with the fuel valve. i have suggested she ride until it dies, then quickly remove the float bowl drain and see if their is any fuel. I had her clean the vent hole in the gas cap and also restart with gas cap off, but i dont think either of those is the problem.

Sounds to me like the strainer may be clogged, but over a day or so, it might leak enough gas to fill the float bowl.

ideas?

Greetings:

That's a good theory. The petcock could be stuck too. BTW it isn't necessary to remove the bowl to check for fuel. There's a screw that drains the bowl on the stock carbs.

Wheelman, put on your glasses. He said "then quickly remove the float bowl drain and see if their is any fuel."

Greetings:

Glasses (monocle, actually) lost in strip poker game with Lindsay Lohan and the late Amy Winehouse.
Still no need to remove, but only loosen the screw.
