Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

'85 Spree doesn't like starting; it takes absolutely forever to get the thing running. The Honda service manual's troubleshooting section says first to check that there is fuel getting to the carb. Checked, no problem there. Moved on to the spark plug. Pulled it, grounded it against the head, and got a very, very weak spark-on a brand new BPR6HS plug. I began checking resistances, and the secondary coil on the plug wire had approximately twice the resistance of the spec (manual says 3.7-4.5 kohms, my multimeter showed 9.3). This means that my plug wire needs replaced, correct? If so, what is the correct name of the part so I can order a new one?

What Section of the manual are you getting the figure of 3.7 to 4.5 kohms from?

Assuming its the Spree you are working on, the Spree manual reference belowshows 7.4 to 11K ohms for the coil secondary. Your measurement in those terms sounds
Edit: -- Ok a typo in the Spree manual. Page 14-9 shows 3.7k to 4.5k ohms with the ignition cap off. Diagram above says with the cap off its 7.4-11 k ohms.

Yes, I just had gone back and check the manual. Note there is a typo in Honda's table.

Far as I know, Honda only sells the coil/wire as an assembly. If you can get the coil end off, possibly non-resistor automotive ignition wire will do. I've tugged at one, then decided to swap in another coil I had around. Mine felt like the coil end of the wire was meant to stay put.

I would be perfectly okay with getting the whole assembly, as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Previous owner had no clue what he was doing with this thing. For an example, the spark plug cap is nonexistent on my wire, and I bought it with a piece of wire mesh wrapped around the intake tube as an "air filter". Good thing I got it for all of $50.

On that note, is it part numbers 3, 4, and 5 here that I would need to get?

Yes, that's the parts. Cost adds up... if you can borrow a coil and make sure you have a good spark, you may be able to confirm that at least its the end of the $$.

I really hope so. I spent another $50 and a week just trying to get the motor to crank over (before that, I had to use an electric drill to get it started). I just want this thing to start up and run like it should, is all. :p
