Elite 50 YMS V8 muffler - best set up???

Ok, all you wizards of Elite 50 tuning...I am looking for a simple tuning set-up to be able to use a like new 28mm YMS V8 muffler...here is what I have to start with:

1998 Honda Elite SA50P
Stock 49cc piston with excellent compression
Stock variator (with the restrictor plate removed)
Stock rollers
Stock clutch
Stock carburetor (with a 78 main jet)
Stock oil pump ("tied open")
Stock gear ratio
Stock muffler (de-restricted, opened up inlet)

My current combo runs great and tops out at about 40mph (my estimation, since the speedo pointer is past the 35mph max reading).

But I want to put this cool looking YMS pipe on! :coolcruise:

I did try it, but I completely lost my bottom end power. It eventually built up speed and actually had a slightly higher top end than the stock pipe. Not good. So I took it off and put the stock pipe back on and here I am....

My goal is to use this YMS pipe and keep as many stock parts as I can - with maybe only a re-jet. Has anyone had any experiences with a YMS V8 28mm pipe using a stock carb and piston, or am I going to need to go with a larger (OKO?) carb and piston?

Please don't bark at me to check the forums - I searched for an answer and really was not able to draw any clear conclusions...so I am asking if any one has had good success with this pipe with minimal changes from stock (for the other components).

My preference while using this YMS pipe would be: a quick take off and a 45-50mph top end (I am not looking for top speed, but rather good out-of-the hole and mid range power). I am ready to dig in and make any changes necessary to make this pipe work, but I prefer to keep it simple and not "reinvent the wheel"!

Whatever recommendations are made, I will implement them and provide feedback on this forum for future users to learn from...I won't ask a bunch of posted questions/dialogue then quietly disappear after I have a great running combo. I hate it when I see that happen....

I appreciate your input!

Greetings:

Welcome. Nice question.

The V8 has a rep for being a torquey low end pipe, but really designed for 72cc or more. At 50ccs, the revs need to rise by quite a bit for the power to come on.
The stock carb is probably a rev-limiting factor. An Arreche17.5 or 21 would remove that but the stock reeds might still be a choke point. The low end still won't be great, but the rollers can be lightened to bring the revs up

If you're dead-set on that pipe, a lot has to change upstream.
Might be easier just to increase displacement. A Cortessa 47mm bore would match it well.

I have tried that pipe with a stock bore, even my ported stock bore that does 52 mph. I had the same reults as you and had terrible low end. The only way I was able to get a some what decent result was to put on 3000 rpm clutch springs. So in theory the clutch kicked in at 4000 rpm. Even with this, I had more low end with the modified stock like pipe. What I'm trying to say that it is unlikely you will be able to accomplish what your trying to do with the yms pipe on. There are other route you can take to help the bottom end the yms is most likely not one of them.
