taz gear whir

been gone for a while. i remember a couple other people and i were hearing a whirring sound after installing taz's gears a year or so ago. any more people have that issue?

i only put about 20 miles on my spree since installing them, and yesterday i decided to take it back apart. only noticed a few things.

the threads on the smaller gear look a little more worn. not bad, just a little shinier on the inside of the threads.

no metal shavings anywhere.

this can't be an issue with (lack of) gasket thickness. i completely forgot that i was able to reuse my gasket.

i noticed that the new gear is a little bent, probably a manufacturing issue. giving the gear a very light coat of oil to make it shiny, standing above the spree to see the reflection of the ground off of the gear, and then spinning the rear wheel, i could see the reflection of the ground wobble to and fro.

could this wobble be the source of the whirr?

You want to hear noisy gears, try riding next to a Gyro. Straight cut gears are noisy and nothing will ever change that.

I've never had a set of Taz's gears, but can relate to gear whine on straight cut gears.

I rode with Bear, and not even on our nosiest Gyro. The worst whines like 'she's going to blow'. She's a head turner for that alone . Straight cut gears are in many automobiles manual trans as the reverse gear, making that distinctive whine.

-- Wobble --
If the wobble is once per revolution of the input shaft, and the engine is spinning 8000 rpm, you'd be hearing about 8000/60 = 133 hz. Not a whine. If you are hearing 'whine' its engine rpm multiplied by the pinion teeth count. 15 or 16 x 133hz for the Spree gear set puts the frequency up into around 2khz and up. This is into the "I wanna go to Miami" whine our Gyro girl sings. I say sure sweetie, but the Mrs won't let us be gone that long...
