Honda Elite SA50 problems...

Post by srockey »

I bought an 1989 SA50 which had not been run in a long time. Has good compression...120-130, replaced a bad petcock, thoroughly cleaned the gas tank, cleaned all the jets and orifices of the carb...and it ran great...for a while. I drove it to the store and back, about 8 miles. When I came back, and let it sit for a while, it would start, but not run. Any time I give it gas after it starts, it immediately dies. I would think there is junk in the carb somewhere again...but is there something else it could be? Am I missing something?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Srockey

I saw some posts about running low on oil, so I rechecked the compression...with WOT is is a bit over 130.

what about the air filter and the exhaust? also when you cleaned the carb did you tap the main emulsion tube out and clean it?

sounds like dirty carb. did you put in a fuel filter? old fuel lines can have gunk in them as well as the tank. without new lines and a filter it's easy to get the carb dirty again, it doesn't take much

First things first. Make sure you have ample fuel going to the carburator. Your compression is very high for that little engine so I would assume you have a buid up of carbon on top of the piston. Do not start disassembling until the problem is identified and confirmed!!!!!!!!! Probably an easy fix so go slow and confirm that the fuel, spark and air systems are working properly.

That is proper compression per the OEM manual.

I pulled the carb, cleaned it (It was a bit dirty, but not much at all). I was putting everything back when I noticed a small hole in the air hose from the petcock to the engine. Replaced the hose. What a difference. I ran it for about 25 miles. Only get about 32 mph, but I weigh over 200lbs, and I would think the belt needs replacing.

I still have a bit of trouble...when I start it after sitting for a day or so, it will only idle until it warms up then it runs fine. If I try to give it any gas at all, it dies. Any idea what I can do to help the problem?

Thank you,

Steve

I think that your bi starter may be retracted and enriching your fuel/air mixture and flooding it. Try this. When you go to start it with the engine warm, first turn the key on but wait around 60 seconds before you hit the starter. By turning the key on and waiting to start youre giving the bi starter a chance to activate and quit enriching the mixture going to the cylinder.

I bench tested my bi starter and it took a while to fully extend (thus stopping the fuel/air mixture enrichment).
I didn't watch to see how long it took to contract but ill bet it doesn't take that long and it goes back to enriching fuel/air mixture again.
