Possible leaking oil pump? Strange running/starting (spree)

Hello, been away for a while. I recently (few months back) Did a rebuild on the spree engine. Stock piston/rings, hone, new gaskets. The machine runs well, once I get it started. Here's the issue I have:

If the machine sits for any time longer than say two days, it's very hard to start. The longer it sits, the harder to start.
When it does get started, it smokes like * for about five-ten minutes. Really bad smoke, like thats all it's burning. It eventually clears and runs fine.
Haven't really noticed any substancial loss oil at the tank, or any leaks. Just seems like it leaks into the engine.

Any thoughts?
Larry

Greetings:

Oil pumps have been known to leak around their internal seals, depositing say a drop every 10 minutes into the crankcase. That oil does indeed keep things - a-hem - well-lubed, but the cost is a spectacularly Smoky Start-up and great embarassment to the rider. Only cure is to replace the pump or bin it, plug the hole and run pre-mix.
