Gyro Wheel Adapters

Post by motormike »

This thread born when Majourlittle offered up some sketchwork for wheel adapters.
Here are some pix of hub and wheel for our collaboration on the project.

Note the three LOCATING TABS=1/2" wide X 1/4" tall...on a 3 1/4" circle
Allowance on adapter backside must be made.

You can see the tab in slot and the flat flange head bolt that attaches wheelm to hub.
Bolt is 10mm, head is 3/8" tall....studs will be threaded into adapter and wheel held to studs with tapered lugnuts.

Spline count = 19
Brake hub reads = MAX DIA. 80.5 mm

What you thinking?

He is thinking a new hub for the 4 lug wheels, rather than an adapter.

My fear on doing a new hub would require some serious cost on machining. Last time I went to a machine shop with a spline request, it was outrageous.

My though is to make a standard hub adapter you would find on car. Basic disk that can be bolted to the hub and a new wheel can be bolted to that. Only down fall I have found in my first sketchup is that it would be 3/4" thick. Not sure if adding 1.5" to the tire width would be noticed or if it could be hidden by the wheel depth?

EDIT: I just got home from work... I'm gonna eat, and then get this thing on a first sketch and post results. Corrections and concept changes are expected, stupid comments will be met with a rush of silly photos pertaining to nothing.

was trying to see if it matches hubs from another bike.if your going with a adapter, make it so its a 3 bolt to 4 bolt 4x110 or 4x144. that way you have a huge selection of wheels to use. I seen a pic of a gyro that had atv wheels and dio disc brake conversion on it and it looks crazy sick.

In that case, lets make it set up for both. Would a set of atv wheels be stud mounted or could you bolt them on like you do the gyro wheels?

A 10mm bolt requires a 14mm socket?

Alright, first run. Basic concept here is that the plate is 6.5" dia with a set of countersunk holes to secure the spacer to the hub. Relief holes are drilled into the back of it to align it with the tabs located on the hub.

Two (4) bolt sets are drilled and tapped on the face of it. They are M10X1.25 holes.

Need to know the following

What is the socket used on the 10mm bolt. This will allow me to determine the size of the countersink holes and allow for some more meat near two of the tapped holes.

What is the pitch of the threads on the wheel bolt. Another solution is to find some dual threaded studs that would be sufficient for ATV wheels, since the bolt holes may not be a 10mm size.

That only describes its dia and length. If it is fine, I would think that it is around a 1.0. At any rate, once we figure out what it is, it is just a quick ta-da and its changed in the drawing.

Drats! Just measured a 14mm standard socket at I was on the money... Was hoping that I had sized it to big... Looks like the 4-110 pattern will be cutting it close to the mounting holes.

I think the adapter needs to be thicker...
