In my humble opinion both are just as good; although people do swear by the proven Honda quality so they have a tendency to rate it slightly above the taiwan sym motors. (I am personally biased on Honda myself but am giving you an honest opinion).

The Honda AF16 are getting more rare especially in the 50th state (even the USA as a whole), whereas the Sym AF16 are still abundant. Although I am unsure of the availability of either on the island of Hawaii (Kamuela), this is true here on Oahu.

There are slight differences in the Honda and Sym AF16 motors, but parts can be found for both. A great builder of motors told me that the Sym AF16 is a good engine too so I am taking his word for it (since I've seen some of his work... on both Honda and Sym motors).

Just get whatever you can get a hold of. Both engines are identical in cost (in general) to build, just different parts because there are slight differences in the two. If you can get a hold of a Honda AF16, that would be best because it's the original but they are getting harder to find. Because of this fact, the Honda engines tend to cost more (than the Sym) in Hawaii.

dont get caught up in all the hype with a Af16 motor.. yes it has it good pints for sure, One of my fastest drag motors was a dd 50 block.
The biggest difference when I building them is the porting. Since the DD block is so much smaller you can go as big as possible, on the af/16 depending on the application it can be ported in many different ways. Like Dio said what every you can get your hands on will work!

it is... but what I think Tru72 was saying (at least my interpretation of it) was that: Don't get caught up with just a particular model (in this case the AF16). There are other models that will work as well, for example: A variated AF05 will work too.

Honda also made other engine models AF18, AF24, AF38, etc. but a lot of these mother models were not for the American market. Although a few of these have actually made their way here and are on the streets.

I believe certain Daelim 50cc models carry a similar engine also.

Im saying dont have to buy a elite S af/16 motor....A dd one will work just as good .
just depends on who builds it
