I'm trying to replicate missing small panel on my red gyro.Any one have photos or details??

I'm trying to replicate it.I think I know how it's shaped, but Don't know for sure..

Sorry - can't find an OEM photo. Here's a cover I made. Cut to match the body line on the fender side. Rest is just outside the opening profile with rounded corners. Add a slight curve to hug the plastic.

without seeing OEM part,I made a notched piece that fits flush in the opening.I'll cut a cover piece like yours and epoxy it to the notched part. Hopefully I will wind up with a functional cap, which will be removable.Do you think this is the way the original was?How did you get the nice curve on your carb cover??

I'm also fixing cracks and missing parts of fender edges.I'll be painting engine cover tomorrow with Krylon Fusion 2328 red pepper

Your method is above what I did. The original part has flat tabs at the rear, and a ramped tab at the front with some spring to let it latch.

I've had a few NN50's. They get oil/grit under the cover and grind off the paint - like the mockup fender in the pics. I pull the fender to get at the carb, and was planning on a fixed cover to avoid the oil/grit issue. It's 0.040 aluminum and the OEM cover rests on top much like this part. Curve is a few hammer blows 'till it fits. Cutting the part took longer, painting the part took longer. Fab your part and post pics, I'm confident you will create a good cover.

ramped tab?? my tabs weren't ramped ? rather snugly fit into notches.there's still time to ramp tabs?

IDK - flat tabs are fine. OEM part has ramped tabs up front. Sorry about the blurry pic...

So are you SLA printing the part? Edit - Add a better pic of the cover tabs

Thanks.I had no idea how OEM part was made.Since dirt and grease comes out under cover,I think your idea, making a sealed cap is probably the most rational choice.What a pathetic existence I lead. I am a 70 year Noob obsessing over 10 square inches of red plastic !!

SLA=3D printing?? no I'm not, but you probably could make OEM Copy of cap, printing with ABS plastic, great way to resurrect discontinued parts!

Thank you mousewheels...i had never seen a real one either till now. Heres my finished carb cover... all cut from a pail i found blowing down the street one day. I picked it up cos it was gyro blue in color...lol. The engine cover i got used and still needs painting.

Three weeks ago, I bought a 1984 Gyro, and prior to that, had never heard of one. I found a link to the factory workshop on this forum and wiki, and many other tips, so today, I decided to give back to the forum.
A week ago, I discovered that Krylon fusion paint for plastics Red Pepper was an exact match to the factory color on my 84 Gryo. and today I went on the forum to search for red pepper before starting a new post saying as much. However, the search came up with this pre-existing post about paint the carb cover, so I won't start a new topic.
Once I found that the original paint on the Gryo had absolutely no resistance to lacquer thinner, I realized that the original paint was not of automotive OEM paint quality, any of which can stand a light wipe of thinner with no damage. The original paint on the Gyro can not stand even the lightest wipe of thinner. I didn't want to go to the paint shop to get a can of mixed up of Sparkling Red, not only because I didn't want to spend over 50 bucks for a can of spray paint, but also, that the exact mix paint wouldn't have the same mechanical properties as the original paint. So I started looking for an inexpensive spray paint. I started at ACE hardware and discovered the Krylon Fusion paint for plastics line, and the cap on the Red Pepper looked to be pretty close. I never use Krylon on automotive projects because of it's poor resistance to thinner, and sometimes even gasoline, but decided to give it a try since the original paint on the Gyro was not automotive quality anyway.
I had to rebuild all of the mounting holes on the engine cover on my new Gyro, as all four holes had been broken off, and the cover itself had been quite distorted because a previous owner had run the Gyro with the muffler protector missing. Heat from the muffler had distorted many of the fins on the back of the cover. In any event, after gluing up repairs to the mounting holes, I spotted in the repairs with Krylon Fusion Red Pepper and was extremely surprised how perfect the color match was to Sparkling Red. I don't believe that a custom mix at an automotive paint shop mixed to be exactly the same color as Sparkling Red, would be as an exact a match as the Red Pepper. Red Pepper is $6.95 at Ace Hardware. It covers extremely well, has a nice fan spray, doesn't drip or run, and is dry to light touching in 1 hour, and very dry in 24 hours. Also, it doesn't lift the factory Sparkling Red or react poorly to it, so it is fairly easy to blend repairs into areas painted by the factory.
If this tip isn't part of the wiki, I think it should be. Please let me know if it is..
