New to this forum... and have some questions

Post by PhilippeL »

Hello all,

I am not really new to scooters, but let's say that I have been away from this world for some time... I bought my first (and only) scooter, a (Canadian) Honda Elite 50 in 1987. At that time, I was... 14! I remember very clearly my exam to get the license (no road exam or course at that time), the visit to the dealer to choose it (instead of a Yamaha Jog, btw), my first ride on the streets, some small accidents... Wow, so much souvenirs! I was really free to go anyehere!!! This ride have been very reliable for more than 6 years with basic maintenance. But one day, a strange noise, along with a lost of power, stopped the ride. I had the chance to have a place to store it safely for many years, until a few weeks ago...

Now that I am a bit older, I just got my little white and yellow beast back in the shop. It is still very clean for a 25 years old machine! All original, the bodywork is very clean, same for the seat. And guess what, I have been the one and only owner. This is even the only vehicle, still today, that I bought brand new! I want to put it back on the road, and it may very well be the machine on which my sons will learn to drive on the streets. They are 4 and 6, so I still have time  I also want to taste this refreshing ride again.

Ok, enough of history, let's talk of now. I have some questions for you guys :

I read a bit on the forum and understood that this very version is a kind of 'orphelin' between more popular models in terms of parts interchange. I saw some aftermarket parts available for this model, but not as many as other, like the Dio? This is not an issue for me as my goal is not to transform my unmolested scooter in a extremely high performance machine. However, I am open to a bit more power, and speed if available. I also want to keep the exhaust noise similar to original, no extra loud for this one.

For now, I have a question regarding big bore kits. I want to refresh the engine as the original piston and cylinder are still there and they have around 15000km. So I bought 2 Polini kits and I think that they are no longer available. So I am looking for some documentation on these parts. Here are the part numbers and description :

1190034 : 47 mm cast iron cylinder and piston kit

1190037 : 46mm chromed aluminum cylinder and piston kit

Can you tell me the differences between two? Do they really both fit my machine? I did not see any trace of the aluminum one on this site. I am looking for mild upgrade in performance, and Honda reliability. Which one should I use? What are pros and cons of each? Does somebody have a catalog with more info on these from Polini? Is the chromed plated cylinder the same thing as nikasil?

Thanks in advance for your kind answers.

the 47mm kit fits your scooter

it makes it a 70cc

I have never heard of the 46mm polini......but that does not mean much.

Greetings:

The Polini is a very good, reliable cylinder. Durable, and the increase in power is palpable. The problem will be that the power is fed into very short gearing, and after the thrilling acceleration the engine will redline and go not much faster than 40. A higher-RPM pipe (LeoVince SP-3 Kit number 4447) will increase top speed only by the percentage of engine RPM increase, which will translate to 5 (8KPH) or 6 mph (9.5KPH) at most.

So stock gears are too short, but the only dedicated SE/05 gears still remotely available; Malossi's 67-6458 kit - yield a too-tall for 65cc 7.83:1. The best option may be to convert the whole rear end to Elite SA/16 spec, then purchase the aftermarket 9:1 gears for that model.

Instructions for this conversion will best be given by someone who has actually done it.

For the record, the 47mm kit on the short-stroke SE/50 crank in your Elite result in 65cc, not 70. The 46mm piston gives 63. I have never seen that 46mm kit's performance results posted here.

When installing a big bore kit on a AF05E (and let's say a Leovince SP3 exhaust), is it necessary to change other things to keep the reliability? For example, is it enough to replace the main jet by the one supplied in the Polini kit to get correct carburation?

And the stock oil pump, will it deliver enough oil even for the bigger bore?

For those of you running this BBK, what is your setup?

Thanks!

Greetings:

I strongly recommend a 100:1 (sorry, I meant 75:1 or so...) premix in addition to the pump, which should be adjusted for its maximum output at full throttle.

If you keep the stock airbox you may get away with an 88 (But maybe better 92 or 90) Main along with raising the jet needle to its highest position. Beware off-throttle heat spikes due to the too-small Pilot circuit, but my own Flash I survived with the stock carb. If you go with a Pod filter, a 95 or more may be necessary.

I am now in the process of giving a second life to the engine... with one of these :

Datasheet of 119.0037 kit (sorry for the bad quality, this was supplied by the eBay seller)

Does somebody have this same kind of catalog page foe the cast iron? I would like to know the specs of the kit, and compare both...

Greetings and Welcome PhilippeL... :hi:
You should be confident that several top-notch tuners here on this site will guide you in the direction you choose.
I am excited for your return to the scooter scene via the original Elite...that is way cool.
Love the color-scheme, although many may not share that opinion.
Cheers ! !............. :urban:

In Canada, there's lots of performance parts for the AF18E Dio since that was the model most sold in Canada. So, there's gears, and BBKs and carb options, and many parts will fit your Elite. Craigslist Vancouver is full of used Dios, sometimes sold real cheap for parts, sometimes real expensive hot-rods:
