I was riding my 86 honda spree and i heard a clicking sound in the engine and then it died. my friend took it apart and said that something in the engine broke scratching the cylinder and piston. i want to know how this would happen. did it overheat? if i fix it how can i ensure it will not happen again.

did your oil pump work? maybe you ran it without oil getting to the engine. that would cause it to overheat, and then break

Any idea what scratched the cylinder? piece of piston ring? The dreaded loose circlip?
Hard to advise on odds of a repeat with so little info.

I believe the rings just broke and pieces scratched the cylinder and piston.

Could have been a piece of carbon from the head or exhaust port. Do you still have oil in the oil tank?

Really would need to see pics of the bore and piston to tell. Either way you'll need a new piston and rings, and a cylinder boring.
You should at that time decarbonize the bore and check oil pump operation as part of the rebuild.
