Airsal BBK

Post by fsmlittler »

Having upgraded the variator, ramp and weights on my 92 Vision AF05 I have now taken delivery of an Airsal BBK which I will be fitting shortly. The kit isn't supplied with a head so I presume I use the standard head? Also any idea on what needle I need and does anyone have the part numbers for them? I can use the stock airbox or I have a cone filter if that's worth considering?

Greetings:

Not many on the Forum have firsthand experience with the Airsal kit. The stock head was designed for 50cc. When you hog out the 41mm Vision piston to 47, there may be an issue with excessively high compression. Maybe Airsal has designed their piston in a way that considers this ("reverse dome"), or maybe they recommend and supply a thicker head gasket to compensate. Whatever they supply, it's important to MEASURE the compression once you assemble the top end. Look for something within 15 PSI of 120. (UK/Euro gauges may use Millibar equivalent or Newtons per square Deci-Hectare or somesuch, I dunno...)

The stock airbox cures a lot of the serious drawbacks of the stock carb, particularly the small and non-modifiable Pilot size. A cone or foam pod filter looks racier, but in addition to being difficult to mount with the shock absorber in the way, it can lead to potentially damaging-lean mixtures when a big-bore is coasting down with the throttle closed. If you have all the parts of the stock intake airbox, I recommend you use it.

If Honda-san ever made alternate carb needles for the PA carb, I don't know what they are. Run the needle with the clip closest to the pointy tip - richest setting. Consider obtaining a Daytona jet kit from eBay - DayWot had them at one time - or JiangWayne.com or some Euro source. Start with a 95 on the stock airbox and monitor temperatures and plug color closely. I have successfully used a stock jet drilled out to .95mm, but that is more risky.

Thanks for the replies. I have had a look but haven't yet found a supplier for #95 Jets. If anyone know where I can find one please let me know (it looks like the Daytona Kit would be the best option since we plan doing more work so may need future changes).

Yes you use the stock head for the kit on the af05e, there are actually people on here who have used the kit. I for one. The cylinder is actually domed to reside within the stock squish zone. I have an extra piston and stock head milled to 47mm, which isnt needed, if you ever need a replacement as well. The cylinder should be chambfered in my opinion when you get it also. These pistons are not dished and yield 120 +/- psi in factory form with one base and one head gasket.
They are good cylinders for the money but dont forget they are aluminum and keep your temps safe.

Greetings:

LMH's pics are worth a few hundred words. Look at that section around the rim of the piston crown. That's how they make it fit with the 41mm head. It's a bit surprising that compression doesn't increase to more than 120 PSI. You are stuffing a 65cc gulp of mixture into a head volume that was calculated to be for 49. Has anyone measured the compression of a stock piston/head before mounting a Big-Block?

Thanks. Found that but 'back order' presumably means 'we haven't got any'?
Any others?

Kit fitted. Tried various jets but ended up with 110 although I have to leave the filter out and cover off.
It starts and runs fine but top end doesn't seem that much better. It feels like the gearing is too low?
