She's Alive but no lights - 86 Honda Spree

Finally got her running. Carb clean and proper oil did the trick. Changed both oil spots too since PO knew nothing about maintenance.
Currently only the tail light/brake light work. Every other light does not work. Also, I noticed when taking off the basket that there is only one wire to each turn signal (rear). Is this normal?
I'm going to check out the manual now about the back light and see if there is a schematic for electrical in it.
Thanks all,
Michael

Checked out the rear blinkers and now I understand why only one cable to each. Now my question is why are they not working? Same deal with the headlights and front blinkers.

The signal lights get ground from the rack. If the points where the rack bolt down are not quite clean enough you may not have good ground and therefore no light. I would check each bulb with a multimeter. And check the wire that feeds each light assembly yo uh should have continuity from the wire going into the light to the mounting bolt. Where the mounting bolt is can get corroded and break the circuit. When you turn on a signal light both front and rear need to be operational to have the lights flash. I would check the bundle of wires on the carb side that are next to the oil pump on the frame, maybe some wires popped apart. I'd check every spot there is a bunch of wires together that have bullet connectors. If you have no head light and check all of the junctions under the plastic where the horn is and with the scematic you can prop check the headlight having the col our code. My headlight on my spree refused to work back in the spring because the high/low switch was corroded real bad inside. A quick cleaning and good to go. The switch is a little figity and there is a spring and little ball in there if I remember right that can go flying real easy so careful there. You might be able to test the switch where the wires feed it.

Saying that they needed to be all conducted was perfect sorta. The rear blinkers come on But are sold and don't blink. The front blinkers don't work at all nor the head light. I checked with a volt meter and it seemed to be getting 12 voters to both blinkers. I hear the relay? Start but no clicks for the blinkers.

Yup the lights won't blink with only the rear lights, the relay has to have the combined load of two bulbs to blink. Front bulbs either not connected or blown. When you put the head light on high beam does the blue indicator light up? That would tell you there is at least some power in the area of the head light. I'd get at the back of the headlight and test the bulb for continuity as well as the signal light bulbs. Maybe the the head light and signal lights have no ground for some reason, that would so cause that.

To check the relay turn on the left signal and jam the bullet connector for the right signal in the left signals wire so both rear signals are running off of the left wire and both rear lights should blink. Then put the right wire back and borrow the right bulb and mark it working with a sharpie or other marker and try it in the front left signal and see what you have when you turn the left signal on. Now you should check the connections for the front signals and make sure they are hooked to the proper sides. So left to left feed and right to right feed. You can check for ground on the front signal lights by pulling the lenses and pulling the bulb and checking for continuity from where the shaft of the bulb connects in the socket to a good engine ground. If no conn. To ground that way check for ground on the center pin of the bulb. The wire could be reversed the light will still work but you will know of you have ground if you check for ground on both parts of the socket. Then if you have ground turn on the signal and check for voltage on the part of the socket that was not ground. Hopefully my steps will help you find the problem without having to tear too much apart. I trouble shoot sound systems for a living and tracking down electrical issues on the spree is pretty much the same idea.

You'll get it sorted, just take it one step at a time.

You are a smart man. Previous owner had some electrical tape around front blinkers and guys what? they wrapped it around ground.
So blinkers work but are blinking at an inane rate... sounds like a machine gun.
Headlight still a no go. How much voltage does it require?

I think its around the 12v ballpark for the headlight. I wonder if the headlight is not giving a load on the system if there is a higher than normal voltage being fed to everything else. That could be the reason for the fast rate on the signal lights. There are only 3 wires on the the head light I think high, low and ground. I'll take a look at the diagram. If the ground on the regulator or the regulator was toast maybe that could cause weird issues with voltage too. Cleaning the ground on the regulator is never a bad idea. Also checking the plug on the regulator would be good too. I pull the plug out spray in the plug and regulator with special contact spray and work the plug in and out a bit and that can ensure a good connection. Even just pulling the plug in and out a bit can make a connection work that diddnt before. Leave all the regulator and stuff alone until later, get the headlight tested first. That way you don't disturb something and create problems that weren't there before. The head light has 3 wires, green for ground, blue is high beam and white is low beam I think. So if you can get to the wires from the bulb unplug them. On the bulb you should have a circuit between the green wire and the blue wire and a circuit between the white and the green. If yes then the bulb is most likely good and your prob is power not getting to the bulb. Which you can test by checking the wires that feed the light with the engine running. Of course you should see 12v or so between ground and either of the white or blue depending weather its on high or low beam. And check the ground wire the same as checking ground on the signal lights, check for a circuit between the green wire that feeds the headlight and ground on the frame, If I have the rear plastics off I use the regulator bolt head for ground. If the scooter spent a long stored outside I would suspect the headlight switch to be a problem. That or no ground on the headlight or both

I always tend to look for stuff that is easy for someone to get at. That is usually where the problems are. Inexperienced people usually don't play with stuff that takes a lot of work to get at.

I'll check this all tonight. I did wonder about the headlight not working causes a fast blink rate. Really appreciate all the help. I hate having things not working correctly, and really want this scoot to work to get my fiance into riding.

I think I have determined that the headlight is busted. I put 12 AC volts directly to it and it doesn't turn on. I checked with my voltmeter and i confirmed that it's getting the correct voltage on the wires...around 8v idle and 12ish with throttle. So going to order a headlight.

You can put a new bulb in the housing but its really easy to find one cheap on ebay too

Got a light from mopedmark on the way. Decided to disassemble the current assembly and stuck a H11 bulb (non hid) in it.
It works!
Blinkers are still insanely fast.
