Duosport's Honda Spree repair thread.

I picked up a non running 1987 Spree the other day. Along with it I also got a rough 1986 as a parts bike. The previous owner said he had been riding it for some time and then it crapped out on him and he could not get it running. Today I dissassembled the carb. I removed the main jet and it had a large opening. I got a magnafying glass to see the number. It was a #68. I have the original jet from my Elite RS, which is a #65. The hole in the Spree jet was more than three times the size of the #65. Clearly someone had drilled out the jet. Surely this had something to do with the non running bit.

So my question is what is the stock size main jet on a 1987 Spree? Is there an opportunity for upjetting?

Check for modified or missing air box. Maybe someone drilled the jet to try and run with out the air box or something to that effect. A non drilled #68 is the main jet for non Iowa spree.

I have not opened the airbox yet but the box was connected to the carb.

What is the stock jet size on a 1987?

Is it possible to upjet a bit?

Sure, but pointless without other changes. Just install a 68 and be done with it. -

Well if I was to install a 72 jet is there not some modest change to exhaust and air to compensate?

Greetings:

It is tempting to think that a bigger jet will bring more power. It doesn't. You jet to the engine's needs not the other way around. Too big of a jet runs wet, cold and gutless, fouls plugs and pipes quickly. Change jets if you big-bore or install a hot chamber pipe. Otherwise, heed what's been suggested and use a 68.

A 72 will just 4 stroke at wot. It will growl and have no guts. The spree walks a fine line with jets.

I cleaned the carburetor. Threw awayy the drilled out jet and replaced it with the #65 I had on hand. Put it all back together and it started right up! It is running badly with a giant flat spot on ecelleration. Still I had it up to about 27 mph. So I looked for a replacement jet and Partzilla has the replacement as a #60 or a #65. So is the #68 indeed an upjet?

I have looked at several parts suppliers charts and all I have seen is that #60 and #65 are stock main jets. So the #68 would indeed be an upjet.

So I have my Spree running. But it is not running great. It Starts up fine and on the stan it sounds good. It revs well, but when I sit on it and ride it, It bogs down. Sometimes it gets past the bog and accelerates but most of the time it bogs down and won't go over 15 mph. The airbox is in place with a filter. As said before I have a #65 main jet in it. Plug is new.
