Just got an 85 spree, gave it a thorough going through, got it running great.
Pulled the cover to replace the belt and discovered someone had mutilated the threads on the crankshaft holding the drive face. They had a mishmash of washers and an SAE nut to attempt to secure the drive face!
Consequently the drive face was slipping on the crankshaft and it tore up the thrust washer and shaft seat on the inner drive face pulley.
My question is, Is the drive face pulley splined????
If not it would have to rely on minimal friction of the thrust washer surface and the surface of the two faces, not very much friction there, as the torque spec is only about 30 foot lbs.
The starter driven gear is splined.
I have ordered a new drive face and thrust washer but unable to source the starter driven gear, and I don't intend to pay 60 bucks for one if I do.
I think I can salvage/repair crankshaft.
Anyone have a starter driven gear they want to sell cheap?????????
Any tips on this appreciated.
TIA

Re: Drive Face Issue
Greetings:
Yes the outer pulley is splined, Unless installed without checking engagement by some previious owner with an impact driver. They get mushed down. Friction is a poor substitute, as you surmised. Used cranks should be around for sale, though some work is involved to install.
