What not to do when installing a BBK

First thing is first, I managed to get the c-clip semi-in the piston, then it sprung out...about an hr after crawling around in my garage w/ a magnet unable to find it, I said screw it, and just used a c-clip from my old piston;
is this ok to do, or should I get a new one!?
Now...my second lesson learned...

Ya... I must be having an unlucky day..
p.s. has anyone heard from daywot? I ordered something from him over 2 weeks ago and havent gotten a tracking number or the item... anyone have his business number at all (does he have one?).. I would appreciate it!

is this ok to do, or should I get a new one!?
Always use new clips, they can get be bent and loose tension when removed. A clip gone loose is an expensive failure.

hmm, ok not what i wanted to hear, but either way, i'm glad i heard (well, read) it!
i've messaged Red Eft Performance to see if he carrys those for the kit i grabbed...otherwise stock ones should be ok, correct? they didnt seem like a different size to my naked eye..

You are coming out of this on top by making everything 100%

- Having a clip jump into a corner of the garage or a broken ring is a delay, a trashed bore is bite

Some get away with a used clip, but IMHO it's false economy. The one time it fails, will override a whole lot of c-clips.

Yes...
I reused a old wrist pin retainer last year, figuring I'd deal with the consequences if it was compromised.
Today my bike stopped halfway through an intersection (~2000 miles later). The wrist pin clip came loose and destroyed my piston and jug... I also have metal in the case, which has to be split (sucks because I just had it open when I replaced the bearings 300-500 miles ago.)
So, while I have always known not to reuse them... I did anyway saying "eh... eff it, It'll probably be fine"... it may have never broken, but I took my chances and it did... I'm now gonna be a couple hundred in the hole for a dollar part.
The bright side is that I'm now gonna be getting a BBK, the down side is a lighter wallet and a bike that is torn down during primo riding season.

Greetings:
No absolute rules; it can depend on how the clip was treated going in and coming out. If it was bent beyond the elastic limits of the steel, a new one can fail too. I have seen it done if the builder knew the entire history of the clip. Too chicken to try it myself...
