1988 elite runs too rich and cannot adjust

My 1988 elite will only run a short time without having to clean the plug that is slightly oily but not visibly wet. I have tried starting the air screw adjustment at the 1 3/4 position and gone out from there. When I get out far enough I see dark fuel bubbling from air screw. I have recently replaced carb with one I got on ebay, but suspect it's not OEM. I have checked air cleaner and air path. I suspect some air port retriction, so wondering if OEM carb is best? Any other things I should check before carb replacement?

Greetings:

Sound advice so far. Also check the air filter element. The foam material has a way of going from "open-cell" to "closed-cell" after only a few decades. If it's squishy instead of "springy" it needs replacement. The old filter simply makes the intake draw too rich from excessive intake vacuum.

do a compression test, clean your carb, test the bystarter, check your reeds. Also i always start off with a new plug and filter when doing this type of troubleshooting
