1887 Honda spree wont start!!!

I recently bought a 1987 honda spree for cheap. When I bought it, it was like -20 degrees outside so there was no hope in starting it there but the old man said it started fine in the fall. I brought it home, threw it in my basement and I haven't gotten it to start yet. I have read this forum and wikispreedia and I cant find an answer. It has new gas in it, new air filter, new spark plug, and I cleaned out the carb. STILL NO FIRE! Help me out please! :coolcruise:

Is the fuel vacuum valve flowing fuel with vacuum applied? Pull the spark plug out leaving it connected, turn over the engine. Do you see a spark?

Make sure the engine kill switch is in the run position. One of the brake levers must be pulled in to close the ignition circuit when starting.

Yes the spark plug gives spark and yes its in run position with the break held. The engine turns over just no fire. How do I check the vacuum problem?

Disconnect the vacuum hose and fuel hose at the carb ends. Put the end of the fuel hose in a cup. Suck on the end of the vacuum hose. Fuel should flow when you apply vacuum on the vacuum line. If fuel doesn't flow the vacuum valve on the bottom of the fuel tank may be bad OR... The fuel filter/fuel line may be blocked.

Ok so I sucked on the vacuum hose and gas started to run out of the other hose into a bucket. It was a solid flow so I don't think that is a problem. Also I put a few drops of gas in the plug hole and still nothing. Like I said the spark plug is brand new and it has spark.

Do Not twist the throttle while you are cranking over the engine.

if you have spark and fuel then check compression with a calibrated tester.

i put a little more gas in the plug hole and it fired for a couple seconds. Should I clean the carb again?

Is the air screw on the carb adjusted properly? Seems like fuel is not flowing through the carb. Clean it again, paying particular attention to the idle circuit. Is the bystarter good?

OK! It started!!! I rode it down the road and back and it died when I got back into the garage. If I don't give it throttle it doesnt stay running. I'm guessing my carb needs to be tweaked so its perfect. I messed with the idle screw and oxygen screw for a while and I cant get it to idle for more than 10 seconds at most. Now what?

Greetings:

I'd say anyone who can get a 127 year-old scooter has already accomplished something great. I didn't even know Honda-san was making Sprees in eighteen eighty-seven.

Sinceriously, it sounds like you're leaking somewhere. All the fiddling with the carb in the world won't fix a crack in a crank seal or a plugged-up exhaust. Take the engine out and pressure-test it, then compression-test it, then bake your pipe. If nothing seems wrong with those, clean the carb some more.
