Scorpion Durability?

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Fear suddenly gripped my heart yesterday returning from a very short test ride on Flash 7. The engine note suddenly changed, accompanied by what I will describe as a "ringing". I hit the Kill switch immediately, then restarted. The noise was gone at idle but came back again on-throttle. I have determined that the ring appears to be coming from the Scorpion pipe I chose on a coin-toss to initiate the build. I haven't removed it, but tapping on the back of the pipe makes a noise of the same frequency I hear when the throttle is goosed.

I purchased the lightly-used Scorp about 6 months ago from a fellow Forum member. I put perhaps 100 miles on it in Yellarosa, but the noise level wasn't winning me any favor with the neighbors. I put the PG Short back on, noting little tangible performance difference with MHR Flash 6, but considerably less raspy.

Having moved to temporary quarters in Donmesswit, and caring less about the noise, the Scorpion deserved more testing. The ride was on billiard-table smooth pavement, with one slight bump encountered on a corner. My one PG Long rattled after about 18 months of regular use in Deepinnaharta. This one clangs after an estimated 150 miles in my hands, probably not much more with the previous owner. Has anyone else had the issue with their Scorpion?

I have to decide whether to cut it open and investigate myself, or let someone else do it.

Hi wheelman. looks like you will have to open the pipe and weld back what ever got lose. that sucks. I feel your pain. I hope it's something simple. reinforce what you can on the pipe while it's open. like the tabs on pauls pipes. seams ect... don't give up on your build. think of it as puzzle you need to solve.
I have been working on my jetting for months. the cold is making it hard to get it just right. my PG pipe is bent out of shape from new. :*: what a pain in the a** to put on. what can we do? GL WM. keep us posted.

Can you stick something into the outlet hole and rattle it around? Only part that I can picture getting loose back there is where the outlet is welded to the inside. Just not a whole lot going on in there at that side.

Greetings:

Thanks for all the good suggestions. When I have a second I'll pull it off and investigate. The PG Short will be called into the game for now. It should be interesting to compare "feel".

Hi wheelman. that would be very helpful if you post the detail compare feel of the two pipes. :thumbwink: thanks.
