Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

I'm a newbie to posting, but been following the forum for a few weeks to get the ins and outs on what makes the Spree scoot. Jerry was kind enough to provide the service manual on CD for a nominal fee to cover his costs. The CD is a must to have on hand and combined with the soon to be how to stickies, a Spree becomes less intimidating and a doable project.

A teardown revealed that one of the camshaft main bearing fragged. Unfortunately, this meant that all those pieces of metal went everywhere they shouldn't.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on what things we need to bite the bullet on and pay the dealer cost for new OEM replacements and what can be get by with used.

Has anyone purchased a gasket set and able to tell me what gaskets are included? Has anyone done a cylinder bored and gone with the .025 over sized piston & rings?

Dealer? What are you thinking? Best have some deep pockets.

Most of the parts are available from Paul at drichardson@core.com as for the gaskets - the dealer is probably your only choice for new but again, Paul may have at least some of them.

Anything over 15 thousands and you are really pushing your luck. A bigger piston may sound good and in theory, it is. BUT you quickly come into other problems like overheating, loose rings, piston slap and wobble.
Bearings start to go out faster and it's just plain headache time.

Plus what the dealer is going to take you for with boring and oversize rings, you could probably buy another used bike.

My 2 cents;

If the bottom and top end need to be reworked, and the rest of the scooter is fine (fork, bodywork, etc) you will probably be better off running down another engine and using the original for parts.

If you find a supplier for overbore pistons, let us know.
