85 spree bogs down at 15mph

Post by don-tardo »

From searching the forum this looks fairly common but there's no one reason that this happens so I'm stuck. I have an 85 spree that starts and idles like a champ. It has great acceleration but I get it up to 15 or 20mph and it backfires and dies. I pulled the plug-it was black. I changed it and took off the air box to see if that would correct it but it didn't help-still fouling the plug and bogging down. I cleaned the carb-no change. I cleaned another carb I had and tried that one-noticably better acceleration but the same thing around 15 or 20mph. I have a feeling the bystarter may be choking it out but I'm nor sure how to check it. If anybody has any suggestions I'm game. I have tomorrow off and I want to get this thing running right so I can have some fun. Thanks for the help.

you have proper gap on spark plug? also it could be the voltage regulator thats the acouprit or however you spell it came out to be when i tried everything on my '84 spree to get out the bogging at like 10-15mph. also check to see if the hose on the airbox is in correctly and clamped on the carb so no air leaks. also take a look at the air filter to see if it is dirty or something. thats about the only thing i can really think of soo hope that helps (: - matt

black as in wet-black or dry black?? Because backfiring is usually a sure sign of running lean. Might wanna clean ur carb and check the jets (main jet) to see if they are plugged.

you may have oil in the block. this happens with suzuki mopeds. if you want to check it, remove the intake manifold from the block and look inside.

Thanks for the help. At first it seemed to be running rich so I opened up the airbox, this caused it to run too lean. I put in a new, clean and oiled air filter and that did the trick...man are these things sensitive. It's latest trick is the battery dying. I put a new battery in, charged it and ran it about 12 miles. When I went to re-start it 10 minutes later it was dead. The lights were on (dim but on) but it didn't have enough * to turn the starter. I jump started it-ran home and the same thing happened. Any idea what's killing my brand new battery?

the alternator might be sucking power instead of makeing it.
