Hi. I have to agree with maddog you'll need a temp gauge. PM graphite9 he sells them.
I'm not sure what scoot you have? if it has af16 motor, if you're sitting on the bike the air will suck in from the right exhaust side. exit by the carburetor and by the gap around exhaust . hope this helps

It would be wise to tell everyone what model scooter and what year scooter and what engine you have.
Typically on the scooters I own, ( and could be different from whatever you have ) the air is sucked in through the round hole on the fan shroud by the flywheel and blows out over the cylinder fins and cylinder head fins, exiting on the engine side opposite the flywheel through any gaps that exist.
My Spree engines rotate the opposite direction of my Aero engines, so swapping fans would be a big mistake, because the fan would be spinning the wrong direction.
Is your fan and fan shroud the correct parts that belong on your engine ?
.
Now is your problem that the scooter doesn't run right ?
Or is your problem overheating ?

the fuel cools down the cylinder. when you let off the throttle no fuel the heat will spike as you are going downhill

You really want the airflow to come out the carb side. It needs to hit all sides of the cylinder so you don't get hot spots and warp it. If you do not feel a good ammount of air coming out the carb side it isn't flowing proper. It will come out the exhaust area a little due to the obvious hole there. It helps cool the exhaust outlet a little but that's ancillary.

Obviously if air is blowing more towards the exhaust it's broken. The carb side has a hole for air to circulate then exits. You want hot air to exit toward the back cause you moving forward. You had mention you broke it so buying a new one was the right thing to do instead of posting something about a broken part. It's a moving vehicle, and you should'nt just glue parts together and take it on the road. You can kill yourself or innocent people.
