Budget performance boost help

Post by PhrankStolkum »

I just picked up an 87 spree earlier this month and I really like it the only problem is it doesn't have a lot of torque especially in the bottom end I have it seems to lug real bad when you first take off but as soon as you hit about 15mph the torque picks up and it takes off right quick and I have trouble maintaining speed when going up hills and I find this concerning as I was considering a sidecar for this bike
I have been considering an aftermarket ignition system and/or a higher flow muffler ( it should be noted that the original reason for the moped was because I am short on cash and it was cheep transportation)
Anyway I was just want to know what some people more experienced than me with these bikes could offer in the way of advice or suggestions

The Honda Mini Melody in the UK is similar to the Spree but heavily restricted - probably like the Iowa Spree.

'Bike' magazine spent a whole lot of cash trying to get one to go faster than the restricted 30mph and you can see the results in this video:

Lesson - you're not likely to get it going fast for cheap .

Having said that, I have heard about kids back in the day getting a bit more power by ditching the cylinder gaskets for more compression - probably not recommended .

Not faster

It's not about faster if it was faster it'd have to be registered as a motercycle its about a lack of torque

Agreed I had an 87 that went about 35 till I melted the top end. Listen the advice. I now have an elite and will never go back. Spree are great for what they are. a long lasting 30mph moped. Technically I ca t go faster than 30 or 35 on my elite but I do. Even had a cop stop me for speeding and he ended up letting go as he didn't think it could go that fast

Spree's are a ton of fun to ride, but the wisdon here is to enjoy them at the slow speeds that they will reliably produce.

I started with about 12 Spees, bought an Aero 125, then Elite 150 and then an Elite 250, guess which one is fastest ?

Yes the Elite 250 has to have insurance and plates, but the cost is way less than a big bore kit, carb and pipe, it can be driven for thousands of miles without worry of breaking down, since the stock engine is not stressed. Highly modified scooters are quick but not all of them are reliable.

If you add up the cost of the mods, it is far cheaper to buy a larger engine scooter.

" run whatcha brung....... and hope you brung enough"
1984 Aero 125 57 mph for sale.

Elite 150 64 mph for sale.

Elite 250 77 mph. for sale.

Red Honda Grom, modded to 250cc, 87 mph.

GSXR 1000 168 mph. My new favorite, scooters seems way too slow now.

Thanks I guess I'm kind bummed that I can't really do anything with it but I can understand why I guess I'll start looking for an aero or something

My vote goes to "buy a different bike"
I have found that the only reason for ME to buy a Spree is "profit"...
Speed and torque were not incorporated into the Spree.

Well I did some looking and the picking is pretty slim in my area especially considering id like it to still legaly be a moped I really wanted an aero but the only on I found was a basket case, other than that it was sprees and a few express's and I was wondering how well the expresses would hold up comparatively, i them looked up to make sure they had a variator but the statistics I found were factory and those often differ from the real world. what's your opinion on them?
