Carb cleaning testimonial for 86 model

Post by Paw Paw's Scooter »

Thank you to "Jerry" for his carb cleaning tips--great job. I have an 86 Spree with 600 miles that I recently bought for my Grandson. The scooter had sat up for years & the guy I got it from had the carb rebuilt & the bike checked out by a Honda shop. It ran fine until I added fuel to the tank, then it started running rough & would not idle. I read many of the postings about carb cleaning, but did not think that was the problem. Checked out the auto bystarter, the fuel valve, cleaned the gas tank (did find rust particles), looked for leaks, etc & finally decided to take the advice of many of you on the forum & clean the carb. Sure enough, that was the problem. Runs great now. I have worked on many carbs for hot rods, but after seeing the very small internals of the scooter carb it is obvious that any tiny spec of dirt can cause a big problem. I also spent 2 bucks & added an in-line lawn mower fuel filter for extra protection. Grandson is having a ball & Paw Paw is smiling!!!

some people say don't add and inline fuel filter, that it doesn't work, well i know it does and i run em on every moped i buy, except the express which repetitively catches them on fire...

Inline filters seem safe as long as they are mounted away from hot engine components. Seems to flow plenty of fuel--used the same type that is on my 14hp riding mower. Thanks for the safety tip. I will keep an eye on the filter to make sure it is staying cool.
