I bought replacement rings and the two look a little different. One appears to have a more silver contact area with the bore. Does one go on top or does it not matter?

do i keep it shut even if i know the answer? Yes is does matter, the silver ring is made from a different metal to keep from burning up, the silver ones goes on top along with the pressure ring. for more info look in th tec docs for a step by step i made on changing rings and stuff. The old piston had the pressure ring on the bottom???

yea, its a preference, you can have it on the bottom, that were its supposed to go, but when i put it on the top my compression went up 7 psi. its just a small thing to help in performance.

The bottom ring is cast iron. The top ring is iron with an alloy coating on the outside like MySpree said. The bottom ring, being iron, is pretty brittle. I broke mine trying to put it on, so I am actually running two top rings. Just remember the white dot faces the sky, its the only way the ring fits around the little dowell in the ring groove. Don't forget to deglaze the cylinder!
