Painting a Spree

Post by slowspree »

Has anyone done this? What paint did they use and what works the best? Also, how do you remove the front fender?

I've tried krylon fusion on plastic pieces before and I highly recommend AGAINST it. I'd try what MySpree listed before touching fusion again.

Do you use duplicolor as a primer or the paint that goes on the plastic peices? I am having a hard time having the paint stick to the plastics...

I repainted my Aero with Rustoleum. Best paint for everything. Use a very fine sandpaper to take the shine off of the plastic and then paint it with 3+ very light coats a few minutes apart each other. The only problem is that if you come back to paint it later, it may bubble on you.

I thought krylon fusion was made for plastics, I plan to use it on my spree/aero.

krylon is hard to make stick, when i paint i sand everything finely then i use self etching automotive primer, then i use automotive paint over it, then i use duplicolor clear on it , i put on as many layers of primer as i need to sand down all the imperfections usually around 5, i don't like any scratches or dips in my paint, then i put about 3 layers of paint down, then i put 6 layers of clear coat followed by sanding with a fine grit just to scuff up the clear and fix the imperfections not breaking through the clear then i put one last coat of clear and then im done with a little polishing.

I used Fusion paint with a professional plastic paint prep from an auto paint shop and had very good luck with it... paint has held up two years, even on the footpad.

Krylon sucks, period. All of their paint.

like i said, its hard to make stick, i made it stick ONCE and it still is on there and is not even cracked. but it was alot of prep, more pain then i want to use rattlecans, if im going to prep that much, i use my spray gun.

I had no trouble with krylon fusion paint...

I just went through the normal sanding routines and it's still on there. The only thing I couldn't get to stick was bondo to my aluminum airscoops... but the pait stuck really good to the bondo.

If you're not going to prep you're wasting your time with a rattlecan or a spray gun, though your point is taken. However, most people don't have access (or can't afford) a compressor and spray equipment... what then? Spree are hardly worth getting painted professionally, and brushing the paint on would really look like crap.

Aluminum requires it's own special paint, with an etcher as I recall...

I finally have been in the process of painting the spree and the 2 side covers are turning out great. I sanded them both down, put 3 coats of primer while sanding in between each. I also applied 2 coats of a base coat and 2 coats of clear.
