Spree spewing oil: Oil pump problem?

Post by eisen011 »

My 84 Spree was running okay last year, except it would have issues starting after a long ride (20mi+). After storing it in the garage over the winter, I noticed a big ole oil spot on the floor. The little scoot wouldnt start - even with fully charged battery and new plug installed. Yanked the new plug out and it was oily. Cranked the scoot a few times without the plug in to "dry out" the flooded engine, as a friend told me to do, and oil started spewing from where I had yanked the plug. Any thoughts? A mechanic last year hinted that I needed a new oil pump.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated as this is my first venture into fixing anything with a motor.

Sounds like you need a new oil pump. Your current one is leaking and filling the crankcase.

There is a ball bearing in the spout where the oil comes out that could get stuck "up". I had it happen when I was cleaning it one time. I used a small nail to dislodge it.
