Starter rewinding

Anyone have a video or walkthrough of successfully rewinding a Spree starter?

Began the process of rewinding the starter.

The armature has 10 hooks, each will pop loose at the top with a small flathead watch screwdriver to unloop the wires.

Winding starts on 1 and ends on 5. Then starts on 5 and ends on 10. Both 1 and 5 will have two wires starting/terminating at them.

Winding is done clockwise with wires around the hooks counterclockwise. Starting on hook 1, wrap wire around bottom section 3 bars over to the right, then around and back up four bars to the left. Each is wound 8 times with wire. Then on the 8th time take same wire and loop counterclockwise around the next hook to the right. Continue until you get to hook 5 and terminate on that. Start new section on 5 same as before and terminate on 10 where it all started.

Waiting on a wire gage to check size, then will order up ‘enameled wire’.

It ‘should’ work but I’m neither a mechanic nor electrical parts person so we’ll see.

Ive never heard of anyone rewinding. Only replacing the brushes. If you are successful, please post details on the process and links to necessary parts.

I couldn’t find anything on a Spree starter rewind but it definitely seems possible. Waiting on wire to rewind it next. Taking it off, a lot of the old enamel was stuck together and had to be chipped out but it cleaned up pretty nicely.

For the brushes the lt80 rebuild kits work right?

So the good news is rewinding the starter ‘does’ work. The little brushes were worn out so I swapped with another blown starter and it runs. That said, this engine was completely hydrolocked with oil. Dropped the engine and pulled the plug while turning it over with a drill on the fan side. Most is out now and have the engine upside down for a few days. Can’t say for sure whether its going to fire right up or not until I get it back together but definitely have a strong starter now.

I noticed this other starter also has a broken wire so I’ll be rewinding that one as well. What I am wondering is whether its possible to get a new armature then pull the gear off and put on a new one then rewind it. I’ll rewind the other one and try the lt80 brushes to see if that works. Overall to unwind then rewind took maybe two hours over a few days.

What I’m still trying to figure out is whether the starter should spin clockwise or counterclockwise. Pretty sure its clockwise to engage with the bendix which would turn clounterclockwise then engage with the driven gear clockwise.

Ok so I removed the engine and has a major oil locked engine, drained that all out and the Spree fired right up with the newly rewound starter.

I can confirm 100% the Spree starter can be rewound and work.
