My case sounds familiar to other posts I've seen. I bought a 1981 Express II from my neighbor. The piston was frozen. It wouldn't turn at all. I removed the engine from the frame (amazingly easy) and started going to town. I think this thing was sitting in mud. There is so much filth and grime. Pulled the cylinder head off, with the help of a rubber mallet, broke the jug free. Still couldn't pull it off. After much penetrating oil and heat, I broke down and found a socket near the same size at the bore. I drove the piston down.
Now the bad news, I broke a couple bits of the piston off. I was planning on replacing that with rings anyway. I peered on the engine and it doesn't look pretty. Water must have gotten in the engine at some point. I'm debating if it's worth my time cleaning the old bits or sourcing replacements. The gear case is completely clean. I believe the moped all complete, with the exception of the rear fender and a few electrical pieces. I would load up a few photos, but the files are large. Also, I think I'm going to be running all new wiring. I'm going to have to figure out to incorporate the battery. I have a lot of work to do on this.

R.I.P. your connecting rod. Needs a complete overhaul with all new internals. See if Treatland has what you need. They deal with old moped stuff. If not, look on ebay for some decent used stuff.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Started looking last night. I can buy a used crank and connecting rod, new crank seals, new gasket set and new oil tube (cracked it 2 pieces taking the tank off. Cylinder jug is going to be an issue, unless there's a generic Honda jug. Hopefully, it'll clean up with a hone. Looks like Treatland mostly deals with upgrading this moped. I did see quite an upgraded package, maybe later after I get it running...
