Ebay Rebuilt starter Motors??

Post by Lukesfirstjeep »

Has anybody tried one of the rebuilt starter motors from Ebay? I have a 1985 Spree, and rebuilt my current motor with new brushes and output bearing, but it still spins slow. My Spree was gifted to me, and I have no history on what or how long my starter motor has been wonky.

I was looking at rebuilt starter motors on Ebay, and was wondering if anybody has any experience with them.

I would make sure you have the correct starter motor bendix combo. I believe the 84-85 starters are 10 tooth and 86-87 are 11 tooth, if you have the wrong combo the result will be a slow spinning starter like you described.

Here is what I found....

tarter motors:
1984/1985 Sprees - 10 tooth
1986/1987 Sprees - 11 tooth
Caution: Mixing starters causes binding, slow cranking and may cause starter motor damage.

Starter Bendix 1984/85 (65 tooth gear) <> 1986/87 (63 tooth gear) (interchange causes binding problems)
1984/85 - 31209-GK8-003 PINION ASSY., STARTER (65T)
1986/87 - 31209-GK8-781 PINION ASSY., STARTER (11T/63T)

Thanks. The Ebay seller sells one of each type. I have a 10 tooth starter.
