Honing a cylinder. How much?

Post by krypton »

Ive got one of those spring loaded, 3 leg hones. I seized a ring in my corsa and it left a tiny scratch that barely catches the very tip of my fingernail.
I have honed it for about 30 seconds at half speed on a regular drill. The scratch barely touches my fingernail. Should I keep honing this until it is out? Or how much can I hone? and should I still use the stock piston and rings (new). The motor didn't have 1000 miles on it hardly.

image, the one white looking mark toward the top above the port, is the one i can feel. The rest, im not sure about. I think maybe running it did that. Don't feel anything on them

Yea, it needs to be smooth. No need for a new piston if you just hone it a little but new rings for sure and you have to start the break-in process all over again. Use good grade fuel and non-synthetic oil to break-in rings. IMPORTANT! Be sure there is no air coming into your motor except thru the carburetor. So you will need to do heat cycles first (9-10 times) run on stand until it gets to 250-270 degrees. Then, cool down with electric fan every time until cold Do this 9-10 times. Then, you can ride it and using an accurate temperature gauge, do some easy riding with varying throttle no more than 3/4 for first 80-100 miles and no wot or steady throttle! Follow these guide lines and watch temps! If it hits 380 or higher STOP! Let it cool off with electric fan - ADJUST JETTING - then start over watching temps. NO WOT! Breaking it in means doing it correctly or you pay the price. Simple as that. Listen. Leaking exhaust pipe at cylinder is deadly also. Watch temps. Over-size jet is ok but correct jetting gets best results. Any other BS you learned - forget it. Bones

Sound advice from bones as usual.

My 2 cents: a proper CHT gauge is vital. When breaking-in a new build its important to watch the temps closely. Not being properly jetted or air leaks could quickly burn up a fresh Corsa. When cruising your scoot during break-in, be mindful on HOW FAST the temps rise. If you see it quickly jumping 320 to 340 to 360..STOP! Its a clear indicator that its lean (jets or air leak) and temps wont stop climbing until meltdown. Shut it down before damage happens and find the issue.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.
