Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

Been gone quite a while, but this summer I finally got around to pulling my 85 out of the shed, cleaned it up and got it running again. It had been put up for 10 years or more, can't really remember why. I have alot more patience now and an extra 30 pounds or so for the Spree to drag.

Things I've done:

• Cleaned/stripped/sealed gas tank

• Replaced petcock and strainer

• Cleaned out old, rotted air filter from box, replaced with new, sealed box

• Cleaned carb, which was surprisingly clean, must have run it dry before putting it away

• Cleaned intake, replaced reed with new carbon fiber reed

• Replaced battery

• Replaced starter relay

• Added trickle charger

• Replaced spark plug

• Cleaned and replaced final drive oil

Starts well, idles beautifully, idle mixture feels like it is in a good place. But it doesn't take off from a stop like I remember it before, and the pitch at WOT seems like it is nowhere near as high as what it used to sound like, on the stand or on the road, and it will only go about 22 mph. Rode it around a while in the neighborhood, trying to see figure out what else I could be missing, and shredded a belt. Obtained and installed new belt, didn't help at all. Replaced crank seals this weekend, no help there either. I checked compression at some point and I think it was about 110, I should test it again though.

What else could I be missing here?

Check exhaust flow.
Performance on stand doesn't tell you much. Spree should take off fairly well, but then take a while to get to top speed. But you'd remember that from 10 years ago.
Spray around carb with ether or similar, looking for air leaks in intake tract.
