Brand New 20 Year old NQ50

Post by skaltpunk »

So, i just bought an 86 NQ50 with only 66 miles on it. seems legit, too, judging by the shape everything is in. apparently sat in some old guys living room for 20 years under a blanket.

anyways, it runs like a dream except:

it stalls after you've been going and you come to a stop an let it idle.

when it stalls (and this is what i think is the weird part), it won't start right up again - it takes a good two minutes to get it going (cool down?)

i think if i clean the carb and adjust the air intake screw and idle screw i can get rid of the stall, is there anything else i should be thinking of?

thanks!

clean the carb the air screw should be 1.5 turns out doesnt need playing with. Adjust the stop screw as slow as you can get it. Put in a new airfilter after letting it sit for 20 years the foam rubbe probably isnt doing so good. Just wondering how much did you pay for it?

i paid 650. probably a bit high, but for the mileage and condition and rarity, im willing to pay a bit more.

where would you get a new air filter?

also, i have suspicions that the gas and oil have sat in the tank for awhile, should i burn it all then put new stuff in or siphon it out?

you should siphon/drain all of the oil and gas out. You MUST use a 2 cycle oil made for injection any other oil will blow the engine. You can get oil and a new airfilter at a honda powersports dealer. Use the cheapest gas you can find it doesnt need high octane or anything.

there is a drain screw on the very bottom of the carb , unscrew it a little untill gas comes out of the drain tube on the other side. Thats how I do it on my Elite or I syphone it out with fish tank pump air tubing

no thats premix oil its too thick and wont give the engine the oil it needs the oil must say its for injection or you will ruin the engine. to drain the gas remove the big line from the carb and put it in a container you want to drain the gas into then remove the smaller line and suck on it the gas will flow out of the tank. for the oil just pull the hose off the injector and drain it that way.

Some places such as Hotsy(pressure washers) will come and pick it up. At the shop I work at we have 50 gallon barrels of oil that is often times mixed with gas and what not and they pick it up for free ,but that is no help considering how little you have. I would call your waste management place and see what they recommend or a local auto parts place.

Penzoil Marine 2-cycle oil seems to work good in Sprees, and doesn't build up nearly as much crap inside the engine as some of the other brands.
